Ian Diaz reportedly married a former girlfriend several years after the cyberstalking scheme examined in Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story but before federal authorities arrested him.
TMZ reports that Diaz secretly married a woman identified only as Amy in 2020.
Sources described her as a former girlfriend who knew Diaz before his relationships with Michelle Hadley and Angela Connell.
The sources also said Diaz has children with Amy, although the report did not establish whether they were born during the couple’s earlier relationship or after the reported marriage.
The Reported Wedding Came Before His Arrest, Not the Scheme
Diaz and his then-wife, Angela, carried out the plot against Hadley in 2016. According to federal prosecutors, the couple posed as Hadley while sending threatening communications and responding to Craigslist advertisements in an effort to make authorities believe she was arranging attacks against Angela.
Hadley spent 88 days in jail before investigators determined that she had been framed. Angela was arrested in January 2017. Diaz had their marriage annulled that April but was not federally arrested until May 2021.
Amy Reportedly Dated Diaz Before Michelle and Angela
TMZ’s sources said Diaz and Amy had dated before his relationship with Hadley. They reportedly remained friends after the breakup. According to the sources, Amy supported Diaz after he discovered that Angela had fabricated her claim that she was pregnant with twins.
Diaz and people close to him found altered pregnancy tests and evidence that the sonogram she had presented was not genuine, creating doubts about other allegations she had made. TMZ’s sources said Amy continues to support Diaz and believes he did not participate in the emails used to frame Hadley.
Details About the Reported Marriage and Children Remain Limited
Sources said Diaz has fathered children with Amy, but they did not reveal how many children the couple has or when they were born. Neither Amy nor the children has a known public role in the cyberstalking case.
Their identities have largely remained private while renewed attention on Diaz has followed the release of A Toxic Love Story. The documentary’s filmmakers contacted Diaz and invited him to participate, but he declined. One of his longtime friends appeared in the film and continued defending his innocence.
Diaz Remains in Federal Prison
A federal jury convicted Diaz in March 2023 of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury and obstruction of a federal proceeding. Prosecutors said Diaz and Angela falsely presented Hadley as a dangerous stalker, staged purported attacks and reported the fabricated conduct to law enforcement.
Evidence presented at trial linked communications used in the scheme to Diaz’s government-issued computer. Diaz was sentenced on June 30, 2023, to 10 years and one month in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
He appealed all four convictions, challenging the cyberstalking charges, jury instructions, the obstruction conviction and the admission of evidence concerning alleged abuse during his relationship with Hadley.
The Ninth Circuit rejected his arguments and affirmed the convictions on January 23, 2025. Federal prison records cited by People list his projected release date as January 31, 2031.
