Idris Elba is now Sir Idris Elba, and the honor is tied to the same youth charity that helped him before his acting career took off.

The actor, musician, and activist was made a Knight Bachelor by King Charles during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on June 2. People reported that Elba received the honor for services to young people and attended the ceremony with his wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba.

The knighthood was part of the King’s 2026 New Year Honours list. The official government announcement named Elba as an activist, actor, and musician honored for services to young people.

King Charles Knighted Elba at Windsor Castle

King Charles carried out the investiture himself, tapping Elba with a ceremonial sword as the actor knelt at Windsor Castle.

People reported that the Royal Family shared photos from the ceremony on Instagram, congratulating those who received honors at the King’s Windsor Castle investiture. Elba later reposted images from the day and wrote, “We are thankful. The work continues.”

Elba was photographed outside the castle wearing his medal and holding hands with Sabrina. People also noted that Elba tagged the Elba Hope Foundation, the charity he and Sabrina co-founded in 2022.

A King’s Trust Grant Helped Him Train as a Teenager

The ceremony carried a personal link to Elba’s early career.

People reported that Elba received a grant from The King’s Trust, formerly The Prince’s Trust, when he was 18. The support helped him attend the National Youth Music Theatre, a step he has credited with helping launch his career in the arts.

That history makes the Windsor Castle ceremony more than a standard celebrity honor. The charity founded by Charles when he was Prince of Wales helped Elba reach drama training as a teenager. Decades later, King Charles knighted him for his own work with young people.

His Youth Work Now Includes the Elba Hope Foundation

Elba’s knighthood recognizes work beyond acting.

The Elba Hope Foundation, founded by Idris and Sabrina Elba, supports community empowerment, education, youth advocacy, and sustainable development. People reported that the couple created the foundation to support diaspora communities and expand opportunities.

The King’s Trust and the Elba Hope Foundation have also worked together on Creative Futures, a program for young people interested in creative careers. The King’s Trust describes the program as support for people aged 16 to 30 in the U.K. who are not in employment, education, or training.

That youth focus is why the official honor was not framed only around Elba’s screen career. His acting made him famous, but the knighthood was tied to services to young people.

Other Public Figures Were Honored at Windsor

Elba was not the only recognizable name honored by King Charles at the Windsor Castle investiture.

People reported that ice-skating champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were also among the honorees. The 2026 New Year Honours list recognized Dean with a knighthood and Torvill with a damehood for services to ice skating and voluntary work.

For Elba, the day added a royal title to a career that has moved through British television, HBO, Marvel, Netflix, music, and activism. The most specific part of the honor remains the youth-work connection: he once received help from the King’s charity, and he is now Sir Idris Elba for work aimed at widening access for young people.
