The Australian rapper posted that her son is now an Australian citizen, according to a new Daily Mail report. The post showed an Australian citizenship certificate for Onyx, whom Azalea shares with rapper Playboi Carti.
The reaction came fast because Azalea herself is famously Australian. Some fans read the post and wondered why her son would need a citizenship certificate at all, with one of the obvious questions being, “Weren’t you Australian?”
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs says a person born outside Australia may be eligible for citizenship by descent if one or both parents were Australian citizens at the time of birth.

Daily Mail reported that Azalea’s post showed Onyx’s newly acquired Australian citizenship certificate. The word “acquired” appeared to trip up some commenters, who focused on Azalea’s nationality instead of her son’s application process.
Australian citizenship by descent is a separate route for people born outside the country. The Department of Home Affairs says eligibility can apply when one or both parents were Australian citizens when the child was born, which explains why a child of an Australian parent may still have a certificate milestone to share.

The Daily Mail headline also pointed to reactions over Onyx’s name. The name has always had a personal connection to Azalea, whose real name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly.
