During the band’s September 15th show in Los Angeles, someone in the crowd called for “Let’s Get Married,” a Bleachers track that later became part of Antonoff’s 2023 wedding to Margaret Qualley. Antonoff laughed, answered “Absolutely not,” and then added, “Read the news, brother,” according to Just Jared.
The joke marked his first public comments about the couple’s separation since the news became public on July 8th. Antonoff and Qualley began dating in 2021, became engaged the following year and married on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, in August 2023.
He did not discuss what led to the end of the marriage. Instead, the exchange stayed focused on the odd position of having an old Bleachers song become inseparable from a relationship that came years after he wrote it.

The request came during the final night of Bleachers’ five-show residency at the Troubadour. When the fan referred to the track as Antonoff’s wedding song, he immediately laughed and rejected the suggestion before delivering the line about reading the news.
The audience reacted with laughter, but Antonoff quickly made clear that he had not turned against the music itself. He said he still loves the song and pointed out that he wrote it roughly 11 years ago, well before Qualley entered his life.
The Song Had Its Own Story Before the Wedding
Antonoff wrote the track in 2016 and released it on Bleachers’ 2017 album Gone Now. He has connected its creation to the period after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when feelings of uncertainty pushed him toward the idea of holding tightly to the people and places that made him feel safe.
Its connection to Qualley came much later. By the time the couple married in 2023, the song had taken on a personal meaning that was separate from the circumstances in which Antonoff originally wrote it. That history gave his Troubadour joke an extra layer: the fan was asking for a song associated with his wedding, while Antonoff was reminding the room that it existed long before the marriage.
Another Bleachers Track Came Straight From the Wedding
There is another recent Bleachers song with a much more direct connection to Antonoff and Qualley’s wedding. “Dirty Wedding Dress,” released in March, draws from the scene around their August 2023 ceremony, including the crowds and photographers who gathered nearby. Stereogum reported that the lyrics reference the couple trying to shut out the commotion surrounding the celebration.
Antonoff has continued performing the song on tour since the separation became public. That makes the contrast at the Troubadour especially noticeable: he was willing to joke about one older track’s accidental association with his marriage while continuing to sing material written directly from the wedding itself.
Neither Has Explained Why the Marriage Ended
The separation was confirmed in July, but neither Antonoff nor Qualley has publicly offered a detailed account of what happened between them. Two days after the news broke, Qualley’s representative pushed back against online speculation about the breakup.
The representative specifically denied claims involving infidelity or trust issues and asked that the former couple’s privacy be respected, according to PEOPLE. Antonoff’s brief exchange at the Troubadour did not go any further than that. He laughed at the uncomfortable request, acknowledged the obvious context and moved the conversation back to the music.
