Jamie Foxx knew his daughter Corinne had taken control when his 2023 medical emergency left him unable to do it himself. What he did not fully understand until later was how strongly one of his doctors viewed her role in his survival.
The answer came when Foxx asked the physician to tell him what had happened from the medical team’s perspective. “Without her, you wouldn’t be here,” Foxx recalled the doctor telling him, saying the physician credited his eldest daughter with helping save his life. He shared the conversation while sitting beside Corinne on the Aug. 25 episode of Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.
Corinne remembered those weeks in more practical terms. Once her father became seriously ill, she said she went into “caretaking mode” and became “laser-focused” on his treatment, the hospital and the decisions that had to be made while Jamie himself remembers little from the first weeks of the ordeal.
More than three years later, Foxx still becomes emotional describing what she did. He has even given Corinne a nickname for the person she became during the crisis, Michael Corleone, the son who steps forward to protect his wounded father in The Godfather.
The Doctor Told Foxx Corinne Was ‘The Reason That You’re Here’

Foxx said he eventually wanted to hear the story directly from one of the doctors who had treated him. He had already received pieces of the account from relatives and others, but his own memory contained a substantial gap.
According to Foxx, the doctor immediately centered Corinne’s role. “Without her, you wouldn’t be here,” he recalled being told. Foxx said the physician later made the point even more explicitly, telling him that his daughter had saved his life and was the reason he was still there, according to PEOPLE.
Foxx compared her response to Michael Corleone’s actions in The Godfather after he realizes his wounded father, Vito Corleone, has been left vulnerable at the hospital. In Foxx’s telling, Corinne similarly became the person who took charge and protected him while the family was dealing with his condition and intense outside interest in what had happened.

Corinne described a response driven less by deliberation than necessity. She said adrenaline took over and she became “laser-focused” as the family dealt with her father’s condition. Caring for a parent under life-threatening circumstances was not something she had expected, but she said there was little space to process the fear while decisions still had to be made.
At the same time, Jamie’s hospitalization had become major entertainment news. His family deliberately released few medical details, creating an information vacuum that was quickly filled by speculation and increasingly bizarre online claims, including conspiracy theories that Foxx had been cloned.
Corinne said she had never experienced being on that side of the internet before, but she still did not believe public pressure entitled strangers to her father’s private medical information. Her priority, she explained, was making sure he was safe rather than satisfying the demands for details about his condition.
Foxx Was Missing Nearly Three Weeks From His Own Story
Foxx did not publicly disclose the diagnosis until his 2024 Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…. During the special, he revealed that a brain bleed led to a stroke after he developed a severe headache while working in Atlanta in April 2023.
He said he lost consciousness and could not remember approximately 20 days. When he woke, he was in a wheelchair and facing a difficult rehabilitation process. Netflix’s account of the special confirms that Foxx used the performance to disclose publicly that he had suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke.
Foxx told Palmer that he later returned to the Atlanta hospital and met nurses who had cared for him during the period he cannot remember. He recalled one nurse telling him that his recovery was extraordinary given the severity of the condition medical workers saw when he arrived.
Comedy Was Still There When Foxx Began Recovering
The physical recovery did not immediately make Foxx feel fortunate. He told Palmer that hearing he had been given a second chance could be frustrating while he was still trying to understand why the stroke had happened and why he suddenly needed rehabilitation.
One part of his old personality, however, was already intact. Corinne remembered medical workers asking questions intended to evaluate her father’s condition, only for Foxx to answer while impersonating Denzel Washington. Foxx joked that his habit of slipping into characters complicated routine assessments because staff sometimes had to determine whether he was confused or simply performing.
Humor eventually became part of the way Foxx processed what had happened. It also provided the framework for What Had Happened Was…, the stand-up special he filmed in Atlanta after his recovery, allowing him to revisit an experience that he has said remains deeply emotional.
Father and Daughter Are Back Working Side by Side
The new interview placed Jamie and Corinne beside each other rather than recounting the ordeal separately. Their appearance on Palmer’s podcast also coincided with another milestone in their long-running professional partnership, Beat Shazam reaching its 100th episode.
Jamie hosts and executive produces the Fox music game show, while Corinne works alongside him as co-host and deejay. The series returned for its latest season in July 2026, continuing a television partnership that began years before the medical emergency.
Their relationship has changed outside work as well. Corinne married producer Joe Hooten in September 2024, and Jamie told Palmer that he has since cleared roughly 10 acres of his property because he wants the couple to move closer to him.
Corinne was less convinced by her father’s proposed family compound. She joked that moving into his backyard would hardly give the newlyweds much independence because Jamie would almost certainly keep showing up.
