John Fogerty says a movie about his life is now in development.
The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman told The Hollywood Reporter that a biopic is in the works and that the script is being written.
Fogerty shared the update while attending the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony, where he received the Johnny Mercer Award. He called the idea of a movie about his life “such an honor.”
The project is still early. No actor, director, studio, production date, or release plan has been announced.
Fogerty’s Story Includes More Than Creedence Hits
Fogerty wrote and sang many of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s best-known songs, including “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Born on the Bayou,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” The band became one of the biggest American rock groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but the years after that success were marked by a breakup and long disputes over rights and control.
For a movie, that gives the story more than a rise-to-fame arc. Fogerty’s life includes the songs, the band’s collapse, his fight with Fantasy Records and Saul Zaentz, the years when his relationship with his own catalog was strained, and the late-career moment when he finally bought back a majority stake in the publishing rights.
He Bought Back a Majority Stake in His Creedence Publishing
Fogerty acquired a majority interest in the worldwide publishing rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog from Concord in 2023. His official site described the deal as the end of a decades-long fight over songs he had written early in his career.
The rights dispute shaped the way Fogerty talked about Creedence for years. People reported that he avoided performing some of the band’s material for a long period because he did not want Zaentz to profit from it.
Fogerty’s 2023 purchase changed that relationship. Instead of watching other artists sell catalogs, he bought back control of much of his own.
The Songwriters Hall of Fame Honored Him in 2026
The biopic news arrived during a week when Fogerty was being honored for the writing behind those songs. The Songwriters Hall of Fame’s official recap said Steve Miller presented him with the Johnny Mercer Award, the organization’s highest honor.
Fogerty also performed a medley at the ceremony that included “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” and “The Old Man Down the Road.” The organization noted that he had been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 before receiving the Mercer honor in 2026.
His John’s Version Album Put the Catalog Back in His Hands

Fogerty revisited the Creedence songs again with Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years (John’s Version), a 20-track collection released in 2025. People reported that Taylor Swift’s re-recording project helped inspire him to make new versions of his own songs.
His sons Shane and Tyler worked on the album, with Shane co-producing the project. Fogerty told People that his wife, Julie, first suggested the “John’s Version” idea after seeing what Swift had done with her catalog.
The album includes new recordings of Creedence staples such as “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain.”
The Movie Is Still in the Writing Stage
Fogerty did not announce casting or a production team for the biopic. The Hollywood Reporter said only that the film is being made and that a script is currently being written.
That leaves the project with several open questions, including who will play Fogerty, how much of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s breakup will be covered, and how the film will handle the publishing fight that followed him for decades.
