Juliette Lewis is back in Cape Fear, but Apple TV’s new series is not bringing her back as Danielle Bowden.

The actress makes a surprise appearance in Episode 3, “Phantom Sensations,” which premiered June 12. People reported that Lewis is revealed as the masked woman who has been following Javier Bardem’s Max Cady.

The appearance comes 35 years after Lewis starred in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 Cape Fear movie opposite Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange. Lewis was 18 when the role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Warning: spoilers follow for Cape Fear Episode 3.

Episode 3 Reveals Lewis Behind the Mask

Apple TV’s Cape Fear stars Bardem as Max Cady, a convicted murderer who is released from prison and begins targeting the married attorneys connected to his case. Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, and Patrick Wilson plays her husband, Tom Bowden.

In Episode 3, Max comes home to find a video waiting for him. The masked woman removes her face covering, smiles into the camera, and reveals herself as Lewis. People reported that she tells Max, “Hey Max. I heard you got out,” before singing a version of the Butthole Surfers song “Jingle of a Dog’s Collar.”

The scene sends Max into a panic. People reported that he grabs his head, yells at the screen, and smashes the TV while Lewis’ character keeps smiling in the video.

She Is Not Playing Danielle Bowden Again

Entertainment Weekly reported that Lewis is not expected to be playing Danielle Bowden, the teenager she portrayed in the 1991 film. Showrunner Nick Antosca told the outlet he always wanted Lewis involved in the new series, but the show is not treating the Apple TV version as a direct continuation of Scorsese’s movie.

Lewis’ 1991 role is still part of why the casting lands so sharply. In Scorsese’s film, Danielle was the daughter of Sam and Leigh Bowden, played by Nolte and Lange, and De Niro’s Max Cady used her vulnerability as part of his revenge against the family.

The Apple TV series puts Lewis on the other side of the fear. Her new character is the one sending Max a message, following him, and forcing him into a reaction the audience has not seen from him before.

Nick Antosca Wanted More Than a Cameo

Antosca told People that he did not want Lewis’ appearance to feel like a one-scene reference for viewers who remembered the movie. He said he wanted the role to be meaningful without pulling too much attention away from the new series.

The showrunner also told Entertainment Weekly that he had wanted to work with Lewis again after she appeared on his Hulu series The Act. Amy Adams told EW that she has more scenes with Lewis coming up and described her as “lovely and committed and fun.”

The New Series Changes the Bowden Story

The Apple TV series is inspired by John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners and the earlier Cape Fear film versions. Apple’s official page describes the show as a thriller about Max Cady infiltrating the family of the married attorneys who helped put him behind bars.

The new version changes the Bowden family setup. Adams’ Anna and Wilson’s Tom are both lawyers, and Max’s release brings his old case back into their home, marriage, and children’s lives.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are executive producers on the series. People reported that Antosca said both men read scripts, watched cuts, and gave notes during the making of the show.

Bardem Says the Reveal Points to Max’s Past

Decider reported that Bardem described Lewis’ mysterious character as connected to Max’s childhood trauma. The dog collar, the song, and the video message all hit Max in a way that breaks through the control he has shown in the first episodes.

The series does not use that reaction to excuse Max’s violence. It gives the audience a first look at the part of his past that still frightens him.

Lewis’ Return Lands Early in the Season

Cape Fear premiered globally on Apple TV on June 5 with its first two episodes. Apple lists Episode 3, “Phantom Sensations,” as the next chapter, with new episodes releasing every Friday.

Lewis’ reveal arrives while the season is still setting up Max’s connection to Anna, Tom, and their children. The episode leaves her character’s identity, history, and full connection to Max unresolved.

New episodes of Cape Fear stream Fridays on Apple TV.
