Kaitlan Collins says she does not want President Donald Trump’s personal attacks to turn their exchanges into a feud that distracts from her reporting.
During a July 27 appearance on The Daily Show, the CNN anchor told Jon Stewart that viewers should focus on the questions she asks and the answers the president does or does not provide.
The interview followed Trump’s July 24 speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where he dismissed Collins’ journalism award as “fake,” criticized her demeanor and repeatedly told her to smile.
Collins said the insults themselves were familiar. What surprised her was hearing them before an unusually quiet room filled with members of Trump’s administration and political circle.
Collins Was Not Surprised by Trump’s Remarks
Stewart opened the interview by asking Collins how her weekend had gone. “It was good. It was quiet,” she initially joked before acknowledging that it had not been.
Collins said confrontational exchanges with Trump occur regularly while she reports from the White House. The dinner placed similar remarks before a larger audience that included administration staffers, Cabinet officials, Republican members of Congress and presidential allies.
“What was most surprising to me was, the room was filled with a lot of his staffers, his cabinet, his allies, Republicans in Congress,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “It was so quiet in the room during the president’s remarks.” Stewart jokingly suggested that the silence reflected how much those attendees respected Trump. Collins answered, “Who’s to say?”
She Wants Attention Kept on Trump’s Answers
Stewart praised Collins for remaining composed during her encounters with the president. She said her response is guided by the same principle regardless of whether a Republican or Democrat occupies the White House.
“It’s really not about me, and I don’t want it to be about my reaction,” Collins explained. Allowing the coverage to center on how she feels, she argued, would reduce the story to a personal back-and-forth between a reporter and the president.
Collins said it is more effective to remind viewers what she had asked or reported when Trump became angry and began criticizing her. “It’s important to put the reminder back on the work, on the question, and on the non-answers that we get,” she said.
Trump Dismissed the Award as ‘Fake’

Collins received the WHCA Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure in the broadcast category. The honor included a $5,000 prize. Her winning work covered Trump’s contentious February 2025 Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During his dinner speech, Trump briefly congratulated Collins before arguing that she did not deserve the award. “It was all about me,” he said, according to the complete speech transcript. “It was fake.”
He then called Collins a “young, attractive woman,” complained that she never smiles and repeatedly instructed her to do so. Trump also attacked CNN and compared Collins to Dylan Mulvaney while referencing Mulvaney’s 2023 Bud Light promotion.
Collins told Stewart that receiving recognition for reporting that involved Trump had “really bothered him, clearly.” She wrote that receiving the award from CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer was the “second-best part” of the evening. The first, she said, was reminding the audience why the First Amendment and asking uncomfortable questions of powerful people remain important.
