Katey Sagal says reaching her 70s has not changed one part of her life that she once assumed would eventually disappear.
The Married… with Children star made Ted Danson visibly uncomfortable when he asked what he should know about her during an appearance on his Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast.
“I’m very sexual, Ted,” Sagal replied. “I’m at this age of my life and still into it.” She later explained that she had expected sex to become a distant memory by 72 but had been surprised to discover that it had not.
The conversation also connected directly to their next project. Sagal and Danson are currently filming an Apple TV comedy in which they play older romantic partners, allowing the actor to bring the same rarely discussed experience to the screen.
Ted Danson Was Not Ready for Sagal’s Answer
Danson opened the subject with a broad question, asking his new costar what he should know about her.
Sagal’s immediate answer left the 78-year-old host searching for a response. He joked that the conversation had made him sweat and suggested that he might be the opposite, before quickly clarifying that he remains deeply in love with his wife of more than three decades, Mary Steenburgen.
The exchange formed part of a wider conversation about Sagal’s career, addiction recovery, family and new work with Danson. The full episode was released on August 5 through Where Everybody Knows Your Name.
Sagal did not present her answer as a confession or an attempt to shock him. She spoke matter-of-factly about discovering that aging had not erased her interest in sex in the way she once expected.
“I thought at this age it would just be a distant memory,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “And it’s not.”
She Wants People to Talk About Sex After 70
Sagal said she believes discussing sexuality later in life is healthy precisely because it is often treated as though it no longer exists.
Her comments were less about revealing private details than challenging the assumption she had carried into her own 70s. She had expected desire to fade naturally with age and was surprised when her experience proved otherwise.
Sagal has previously spoken about bringing sexual confidence to her characters rather than allowing older or married women to become invisible.
When Peggy Bundy was originally conceived as a more careless and unglamorous character on Married… with Children, Sagal chose the towering red hair, tight clothing and exaggerated confidence that became central to the role.
She later told ELLE that she believed Peggy and Al Bundy needed genuine sexual energy between them, even within a marriage built around constant insults and dysfunction.
That instinct now extends to characters closer to Sagal’s current age, with her latest television role treating older romance as part of ordinary life rather than a novelty.
Her Apple TV Role Will Put Older Intimacy Onscreen
Sagal and Danson are filming an untitled half-hour comedy led and executive-produced by Elizabeth Banks.
Banks plays Heidi, a woman rebuilding her life after a difficult divorce who becomes involved in coordinating dates for residents at her father’s retirement community.
Danson plays Heidi’s father, while Sagal portrays his new girlfriend, Mavis. Rob Delaney plays Mavis’ perpetually single son, creating an uneasy alliance between the younger characters as their parents continue pursuing their own relationships.
The official Apple TV announcement describes the project as a comedy about second chances, dating and unexpected family complications. Sagal and Danson’s casting was subsequently reported by TVLine.
Sagal said the series will show people in their 70s having sex—although not literally—and described that portrayal as affirming.
Rather than treating older characters only as parents or grandparents observing younger relationships, the show gives them desires and romantic lives of their own.
No official title, premiere date or trailer has been released while production continues in Los Angeles.
She Still Calls Husband Kurt Sutter ‘Super Hot’
Sagal connected her comments to her marriage to writer and producer Kurt Sutter, whom she described to Danson as “super hot.”
She added that Sutter does not view himself that way, which she considers part of his appeal. Sagal said she has never been attracted to men who are overly convinced of their own desirability.
When the couple began dating, Sutter told her that he was “half a girl,” which she understood as his way of saying that he was emotionally open and comfortable with his feminine side.
Sagal and Sutter married in 2004 after meeting through recovery circles and a mutual friend. She has previously joked that she brought her sponsor to their first coffee date because her history had left her distrustful of her own romantic judgment.
Sutter later became stepfather to Sagal’s older children, Sarah Grace White and Jackson White. The couple welcomed their daughter, Esmé, through a surrogate in 2007.
They have also worked together repeatedly. Sutter created the role of Gemma Teller Morrow in Sons of Anarchy with Sagal in mind, and the couple later collaborated on The Bastard Executioner and their joint PIE podcast.
For Sagal, the unexpected part of aging has not been that intimacy changed. It is that she had absorbed the idea that it was supposed to disappear—and reached 72 to find that it had not.
