Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer are sharing the screen again nearly 40 years after Tequila Sunrise.

The actors are now starring together in The Madison, Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ drama about the Clyburn family leaving New York for Montana after a tragedy.

While promoting the series, Russell looked back at Tequila Sunrise and said the 1988 movie was not always easy behind the scenes. In an interview with People, he said there were “difficulties” between Pfeiffer and writer-director Robert Towne during production.

Russell said he sometimes became a go-between on set. He also said that experience helped him and Pfeiffer build a stronger working relationship.

Russell Said He Became a Go-Between on Tequila Sunrise

Tequila Sunrise starred Mel Gibson, Pfeiffer, Russell, Raul Julia, J.T. Walsh, Arliss Howard, and Gabriel Damon. Towne wrote and directed the crime thriller after building one of the most respected screenwriting careers in Hollywood, including his Oscar-winning work on Chinatown.

Russell played Nick Frescia, a police detective watching Gibson’s Dale McKussic, a former drug dealer trying to leave that life behind. Pfeiffer played Jo Ann Vallenari, the restaurant owner caught between both men.

Russell told People that he already knew Towne’s process because of earlier work connected to Swing Shift, the 1984 film starring Goldie Hawn. That history put him in a different position when Pfeiffer and Towne had trouble communicating.

“I was a bit of a go-between,” Russell said, according to People. He said the job was not formal, but it became part of how he experienced the production.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Pfeiffer described Russell as her “comrade in arms” from the shoot. She said he helped keep her spirits up during difficult days.

Russell also praised Pfeiffer’s role in the movie. People reported that he called her character the “glue” of Tequila Sunrise, which depended on the tension among McKussic, Frescia, and Jo Ann.

The Madison Brings Them Back Together Decades Later

Paramount+ lists The Madison as a drama about the Clyburn family uprooting their lives to Montana. The series premiered on March 14, 2026.

Pfeiffer and Russell lead the cast with Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence, and Will Arnett.

People reported that Russell and Pfeiffer’s old working relationship carried into the new series. Russell said they had a strong connection after Tequila Sunrise, while Pfeiffer said acting with him felt natural.
