Matt Damon and David Letterman crossed a New York street in the November 1 premiere of The Gilded Age and disappeared six seconds later. Dressed as 19th-century gentlemen, they had no dialogue and no onscreen credit.

The two appear a little over eight minutes into the Season 4 opener, “Ring the Bells,” as the camera moves toward George Russell’s house. Decider confirmed their participation with HBO.

The scene was filmed in May on the drama’s street set in Old Bethpage, Long Island, Vulture reported after speaking with producers from both shows involved. The backlot allowed the production to control access rather than accommodate the public on a working city street.

The other show was Letterman’s Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. While preparing an interview with Damon, its producers found an opportunity to fulfill a request their host had been making for decades.

Damon Needed a Background-Actor Paycheck and New Facial Hair

Executive producer Kate Churchill laughed when the proposal reached her, then sought approval from creator Julian Fellowes and HBO executives. She wanted the appearance to fit a shot the production already needed, giving it a good chance of surviving the edit without distracting from the story.

The street set’s limited availability narrowed the possible dates, which had to suit both men. Payroll required extra attention, too. Damon needed to be paid as a background performer, but normally worked through his own company. Churchill credited both production teams with resolving the arrangements instead of abandoning the idea.

Neither celebrity could skip a costume fitting. Letterman supplied a custom-fitted bowler hat he had bought in London, which the costume department approved for the period. His existing beard also suited the production, so the team asked him not to shave it.

Damon had already removed the beard he wore for The Odyssey, leaving the makeup department to provide new sideburns and a mustache. That addition needed attention during the shoot, showrunner Isabel Richardson recalled him laughing so hard that he had to hold the mustache in place.

An Extra in ‘Annie Hall’ Gave Letterman the Idea in 1977

Richardson traced Letterman’s interest to spotting his friend Gary Mule Deer in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall. He enjoyed recognizing someone most viewers would not notice and wanted to try that kind of background appearance himself.

More recent attempts had failed to materialize. Scheduling prevented an appearance in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and another in Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming The Thomas Crown Affair. Letterman also stopped at the set of Jason Bateman’s Black Rabbit while walking through New York and asked a production assistant to put him in a shot.

Damon’s early work gave Richardson’s team a reason to pair them. In a separate April 2023 Vanity Fair interview, Damon and Ben Affleck recalled being two of roughly 3,000 extras in Field of Dreams. Affleck said background work let them get close to film sets and watch professionals at work.

Offered several possible segments for his interview, Damon chose the extra-work assignment as his favorite. Richardson looked at productions filming in New York and settled on a show she enjoyed. A colleague’s connection to The Gilded Age helped the proposal reach Churchill.

The Costume Fittings Were Filmed for Letterman’s Netflix Series

The Netflix crew recorded the preparations and set visit for Damon’s forthcoming interview episode. Letterman had initially dreaded trying on clothes, Richardson recalled, but became enthusiastic once he arrived. Churchill remembered his excitement and curiosity on set.

Damon traveled outside the city on a day off to take part. He also reminded Letterman that their treatment was hardly typical for extras, pointing out the private trailers. Richardson recalled him saying, “Background actors don’t normally get their own trailers.”

Netflix announced Damon as one of the seventh season’s guests in August, alongside Julia Roberts, Jimmy Kimmel and climber Alex Honnold, TheWrap reported. The season is due later in 2026.
