Australian television star Rachael Carpani, best known for her beloved role as Jodi Fountain on the iconic series McLeod’s Daughters, has tragically passed away at the age of 45.

Her family shared the heartbreaking announcement on December 15, revealing that Carpani died “unexpectedly but peacefully” in the early hours of December 7 after a prolonged battle with chronic illness. In a statement posted by her sister on Instagram, her parents, Tony and Gael Carpani, expressed profound sadness while requesting privacy ahead of a private funeral scheduled for December 19.

Though the exact cause remains private, Carpani had been candid about her decades-long struggle with endometriosis and adenomyosis — debilitating conditions that brought severe pain since her teenage years.

A Courageous Advocate for Women’s Health

Carpani transformed her personal suffering into powerful advocacy, becoming a beacon for millions of women facing similar invisible illnesses. She openly discussed “white-knuckling” through excruciating pain for years, often smiling through major events while enduring agony. It took until her mid-30s for a proper diagnosis, a delay she linked to gaps in women’s healthcare.

In a 2021 Instagram post, she highlighted Australia’s shortcomings, stating the country was “woefully, woefully behind when it comes to women’s health.” After successful treatment, including uterine artery embolisation, she shared her relief at feeling “normal” for the first time, while cautioning that solutions vary for each person. Her transparency empowered fans and sparked vital conversations about underfunded conditions like endometriosis.

Breakthrough Role and Enduring Fame

Carpani skyrocketed to fame in 2001 portraying the spirited teenage Jodi Fountain on McLeod’s Daughters, a role that spanned nearly 180 episodes and earned her two Logie Award nominations, including a Gold Logie nod in 2007. The rural drama’s strong female ensemble was groundbreaking, something Carpani later reflected on with pride.

Overwhelmed by sudden stardom, she once confided to her agent a desire to escape the spotlight, admitting in a 2024 Stellar magazine interview: “I don’t want to be famous! Earning a living would be nice. I adore ‘action’ to ‘cut’, but everything else — the networking, the hobnobbing, the dealing with sleazy directors — I just don’t want any of it.”

Hollywood Journey and Joyful Return

She rebuilt in the U.S. with roles in NCIS: Los Angeles, The Glades, Against the Wall, and The Way Back opposite Ben Affleck. Returning to Australia in 2024 for Home and Away as Claudia Salini, she said on The Morning Show:

It was one of the most enjoyable times I’ve ever had on set. It’s one of the first jobs back here in Australia I’ve done, and so it was a really lovely way to re-enter the industry.”

Tragically, it was her final role.

Tributes from Co-Stars and Fans

Co-stars have poured out grief in emotional tributes. Bridie Carter, calling her the “baby of the MD family,” wrote: “This is the wrong order of things. We are better people for having the privilege of sharing time with you… May your blessed spirit… rest in peace.”

Matt Passmore added: “Farewell my friend… The greatest gift you gave was knowing you.”

Carpani’s off-screen passion extended to advocacy on domestic violence, #MeToo, Indigenous rights, and global issues, showcasing her fierce commitment to justice.

A Lasting Legacy of Resilience

Carpani’s fearless advocacy turned personal pain into a platform for change, highlighting how women’s health issues like endometriosis are too often dismissed. Her sudden loss is a painful reminder of the work still needed.

Rest in peace, Rachael; your strength, honesty, and spirit touched millions.
