Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf do not speak often these days, but one of their rare recent conversations took them straight back to the franchise that changed both of their careers.
Bay says LaBeouf contacted him roughly six months ago after taking his 4-year-old daughter, Isabel, to a Transformers attraction at Universal Studios. This time, LaBeouf was experiencing the Autobots and Decepticons as a father rather than the young actor standing in front of Bay’s cameras.
Watching Isabel discover that world affected him more than he expected. Bay recalled LaBeouf telling him that seeing the experience through his daughter’s eyes brought him to tears.
The director shared the story while discussing LaBeouf’s difficult year, which has included a New Orleans arrest, a guilty plea and new attention on his alcohol use. Bay said those subjects were not part of their conversation.
LaBeouf Called Bay After Isabel Experienced the ‘Transformers’ Ride
Bay told TMZ that he and LaBeouf had communicated about six months earlier. LaBeouf told his former director that he had taken Isabel to Universal Studios and watched her encounter the Transformers attraction for herself.
Universal’s own media materials say TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D was based on the film series and created with the director, combining sets, animation and a motion-based ride system to place visitors inside a battle involving the Autobots and Decepticons.
For LaBeouf, the franchise had once meant years of premieres, enormous sets and blockbuster expectations. Bay’s account suggests the experience looked different when LaBeouf watched his young daughter respond to something tied so closely to his own early adulthood.
Isabel was born in spring 2022 and is LaBeouf’s daughter with actress Mia Goth. The actors have kept much of her life private, although both have spoken publicly about how becoming parents changed them.
Bay Says They Did Not Discuss LaBeouf’s New Orleans Case
Bay said his conversation with LaBeouf did not extend to the legal and personal issues that have followed the actor this year. Instead, he focused on the performer he knew through their years working together, describing LaBeouf as a great actor and a great guy and saying he treasures that period of their careers.
LaBeouf was arrested following a confrontation in New Orleans during Mardi Gras on Feb. 17. He ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery and received a six-month suspended sentence, two years of probation and requirements that include alcohol-abuse treatment and anger management, according to The Associated Press.
More recent court records obtained by TMZ say LaBeouf has been complying with his probation supervision and provided proof that he planned to complete anger-management and substance-abuse treatment. The records also say he self-reported drinking alcohol daily. In a February interview with Channel 5’s Andrew Callaghan, he rejected the idea that alcohol was the central problem and instead attributed his behavior to anger and ego.
Bay and LaBeouf Made Three ‘Transformers’ Movies Together
LaBeouf became Sam Witwicky in Bay’s original Transformers in 2007, playing the teenager pulled into the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. He returned for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011.
The three films covered a formative stretch of LaBeouf’s career. He was still in his early 20s when the first movie became a blockbuster and spent the following years as the human lead of one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises.
The actor-director relationship could be intense. Both men have discussed the demands of those productions and LaBeouf’s desire to move toward smaller, more dramatic projects after completing the third film.
Bay nevertheless defended him when LaBeouf moved on. Discussing the transition after the trilogy, the director said fame was difficult for young performers and recalled that he had effectively helped raise LaBeouf through three movies, while continuing to describe him as an exceptionally talented actor.
