BBC Radio 1 employees reportedly fear further presenter departures after six familiar voices left the schedule and the station added GK Barry and several other new names.
Unnamed sources told the Daily Mail that morale has fallen and some employees believe online reach is becoming increasingly important when new presenters are chosen. One source said remaining broadcasters are worried about who could leave next.
Barry, whose real name is Grace Keeling, begins an initial six week run of Radio 1 programs on September 10 at 1 p.m. The BBC has also said she will present additional series across the year, so the September run is not being presented as a permanent daily appointment.
The wider September schedule follows the departures of Rickie Haywood Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy. The new lineup also includes Charley Marlowe, Mylo and Rosie and Emil Franchi.
Unnamed Radio 1 Sources Say Staff Fear More Departures
The Mail’s report relies on unnamed employees and does not identify a current Radio 1 presenter who has publicly criticized Barry or the new schedule.
One source described morale at the station as poor and claimed employees were worried that more established presenters could eventually be replaced. Another complained that social media popularity was being valued more heavily than traditional broadcasting experience.
The Mail also reports that Barry’s new programs will run for two hours and will be recorded in advance rather than broadcast live. The BBC’s public announcement confirmed the September 10 start, the 1 p.m. time and the initial six week run, but did not say that the programs would be recorded in advance.
A Radio 1 spokesperson defended the new schedule, saying the station remains focused on young audiences while combining new and established DJs. The spokesperson also emphasized Radio 1’s history of developing emerging broadcasters and presenters with specialist music knowledge.
GK Barry Promised ‘Humour, Chaos and Embarrassing Stories’
Barry said she was excited to return to Radio 1 after previously covering programs across the station’s schedule.
“You’ll be hearing my favourite songs, we’ll be speaking with some really exciting guests and, as always, in true GK Barry style, I promise a lot of humour, chaos and embarrassing stories along the way,” she said in the original lineup announcement.
Barry is best known for her Saving Grace podcast and the audience she built online, but the Radio 1 job is not her first broadcasting role. She previously hosted weekend afternoons on the station in July 2025 and has since continued making guest appearances and cover programs.
Radio 1 announced that her September shows are the beginning of a wider series of appearances across the year rather than a single permanent weekday slot.
Six Presenters Are Leaving as the September Schedule Changes
Rickie Haywood Williams and Melvin Odoom are leaving Radio 1 after seven years at the station. Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy are also leaving the schedule.
McCullough described his departure as a difficult decision and said he was ready for a change after six years with Radio 1. He had progressed from cover work to weekends, afternoons and Early Breakfast.
Mylo and Rosie will take over Early Breakfast. Emil Franchi becomes the new Weekend Breakfast presenter, while Charley Marlowe joins Vicky Hawkesworth from Friday through Sunday. Charlie Hedges remains with the Live Lounge and will present it alongside Jeremiah Asiamah.
Radio 1 head Aled Haydn Jones thanked the outgoing presenters for their work and said the revised schedule would combine established DJs, new voices and British music talent.
The New Presenters Did Not All Come Straight From Social Media
The criticism reported by the Mail focuses heavily on the station’s use of people who have built large online followings, but several of the incoming presenters already have conventional radio experience.
Mylo and Rosie previously presented together on Bauer Media stations including Pulse 1 and Hits Radio. Franchi has worked in commercial radio after beginning in college broadcasting, while Marlowe had already presented Radio 1’s Early Breakfast before receiving her new role.
Barry has also spent time presenting Radio 1 shows before receiving the new series. Her route into broadcasting began with TikTok and Saving Grace, but the September programs follow earlier work for the station rather than representing her first radio appearance.
