Michael has passed Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time worldwide.

The Michael Jackson biopic, starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, has reached $911.9 million at the global box office after its April theatrical release, according to People.

That total puts Michael just ahead of the 2018 Freddie Mercury and Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, which finished around $911 million worldwide. Deadline also reported that Michael has now taken the music-biopic record.

The milestone gives the film a narrow but major box-office win, with the Jackson biopic still in position to add more before the end of its run.

Michael Passed the Record by a Small Margin

The record is close enough that the exact gap depends on the tracker. People reported Michael at $911.9 million worldwide, compared with about $910.9 million for Bohemian Rhapsody. Box Office Mojo lists Bohemian Rhapsody at just over $911 million worldwide across releases.

That makes the achievement a tight handoff rather than a blowout. The difference is that Michael is still adding money, while Bohemian Rhapsody finished its theatrical run years ago.

Graham King Produced Both Box-Office Giants

Graham King produced Bohemian Rhapsody, which became a global box-office hit and helped Rami Malek win an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury.

King also produced Michael, putting him behind the two biggest music biopics in box-office history. The Jackson film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan.

Jaafar Jackson plays Michael Jackson, while Juliano Krue Valdi plays the younger version of the singer. The cast also includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and Mike Myers as Walter Yetnikoff.

The Next Milestone Is $1 Billion

Michael is now close enough to $1 billion worldwide that the next box-office question is obvious. People reported that the film is still chasing the billion-dollar mark after passing Bohemian Rhapsody.

The movie has already moved past Elvis and Bohemian Rhapsody on the music-biopic chart. A $1 billion finish would put it in a different commercial tier from most Hollywood biopics, which rarely play at franchise-blockbuster scale.

People reported that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already crossed $1 billion in 2026, while Michael continues to rank among the year’s biggest worldwide releases.

The Film Stops Before the Later Allegations

People reported that Michael ends in 1988, meaning it does not reach the later child sexual abuse allegations that became central to public debate around Jackson.

The film was made with the blessing of many members of Jackson’s family, according to People. Its logline describes it as an “honest portrayal” of a brilliant but complicated artist, but the choice to end before the later allegations has remained part of the discussion around the movie.

The box-office record shows that Michael became a major commercial event despite the criticism around what the film does and does not cover.
