Neal McDonough spent six episodes playing one of Yellowstone‘s most memorable early villains without ever sitting down to watch the finished performance.
The 60-year-old actor said during a recent episode of Arroyo Grande with Raymond Arroyo that he generally avoids watching anything he has acted in.
McDonough joined Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama during Season 2 as Malcolm Beck, a wealthy businessman who becomes locked in a violent conflict with John Dutton and his family.
His reason for skipping the episodes has nothing to do with the series itself. McDonough said returning to an old performance can be “really kind of traumatic and painful” because of how vividly he remembers the circumstances surrounding the work.
One Frame Can Bring an Entire Day Back to Him
McDonough described himself as a method actor and said even a single image from a project filmed decades ago can unlock remarkably specific memories.
“If I look at a frame of a show from 20 years ago, I know exactly the thought I was thinking,” he said. He added that he can remember the song in his head and where he was going that day.
Fox News reported that McDonough’s rule extends across his career rather than being specific to Yellowstone. “I’ve never seen it,” he said of the series. “I don’t watch any of my stuff.”
McDonough Leaves His Own Movie Premieres Before the Screening
His avoidance has created an unusual premiere routine with his wife, Ruvé McDonough.
Page Six reported that the couple will attend the red carpet, enter the theater and then leave through an exit rather than stay for the movie.
McDonough said they might go out for dinner and return later for the after-party. When someone asks what he thought of the film, he joked that he can still tell them it was great.
He also said he does not need to watch a finished scene to decide whether his performance worked. McDonough trusts what he did while filming and pointed to his continued employment as reassurance that he is doing something right.
Malcolm Beck Became One of ‘Yellowstone’s’ Major Season 2 Threats
McDonough appeared in six episodes of Yellowstone‘s second season as Malcolm Beck, with Terry Serpico playing his brother Teal.
The Beck brothers enter the story as powerful businessmen opposed to plans involving Dan Jenkins and Thomas Rainwater. Their conflict eventually expands to include the Dutton family and drives a substantial part of the season’s later episodes.
Paramount Network introduced the brothers in a Season 2 featurette that positioned them among the Duttons’ principal adversaries. McDonough described Malcolm at the time as a man who lived by strict rules and handled violations on his own terms.
The role joined a long list of antagonists in McDonough’s career, including characters on Justified, Arrow and Tulsa King.
McDonough Has Also Spoken About a Much Harder Period Away From the Screen
During the same interview, McDonough revisited the career setback he has said followed his departure from ABC’s Scoundrels in 2010.
McDonough has maintained that he was fired after refusing to perform intimate scenes because of boundaries he had established around his marriage. He has said the fallout left him struggling to find work and placed significant financial pressure on his family.
He has also discussed how his drinking worsened during that period. In a separate interview earlier this year, McDonough recalled Ruvé eventually telling him to choose between his family and alcohol. He said he stopped drinking after that conversation.
McDonough and Ruvé have since worked together as producers on projects including Boon, Homestead, The Warrant: Breaker’s Law and The Last Rodeo.
