Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley are reuniting on television, but the new project is not built around Mystic Falls nostalgia.

The former The Vampire Diaries co-stars are attached to star in and executive produce You Deserve to Know, a Hulu drama based on Aggie Blum Thompson’s 2025 thriller novel. Deadline first reported the project, and People later confirmed that Dobrev will play Gwen while Wesley will play Scott.

The pairing gives the show an immediate fan hook because Dobrev and Wesley spent years linked onscreen as Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore. The new series, however, moves them into a suburban murder mystery about neighbors, secrets, and a friendship group that falls apart after one husband is killed.

Dobrev also announced the news on Instagram, writing that she and Wesley had been waiting to share the project and were excited to help shape the adaptation as both actors and executive producers.

The Hulu Drama Begins With a Murder Among Neighbors

You Deserve to Know follows three suburban couples who are next-door neighbors and close friends. According to the official logline quoted by Entertainment Weekly, the group’s friendship cracks open after one of the husbands is murdered and a trail of secrets begins to surface.

The book’s publisher, Macmillan, describes the novel as a domestic suspense story centered on Gwen, Aimee, and Lisa, three women in East Bethesda whose friendships are tested after Gwen’s husband is found murdered following a weekly Friday night dinner. The TV adaptation has Dobrev playing Gwen and Wesley playing Scott, placing the former CW co-stars on opposite sides of the investigation.

That premise gives the reunion a different shape from a simple TV nostalgia play. Dobrev and Wesley are not returning as Elena and Stefan, and Hulu has not announced a connection to The Vampire Diaries beyond the casting. The current details point to an adult domestic thriller built around marriage, suspicion, and the private lives of people who thought they knew their neighbors.

Brian Tanen is writing the project, which is being developed by Alex Cooper’s Unwell and Kapital Entertainment. People reported that executive producers include Tanen, Thompson, Cooper, Aaron Kaplan, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre, with Dobrev and Wesley also serving as executive producers.

“We fell in love with this novel and getting to help shape its adaptation from both sides of the camera has been incredibly exciting,” she wrote, while thanking Hulu, Unwell, Cooper, and Kapital Entertainment.

People noted that she has been involved as a producer on projects including General Admission and It Happened One Summer, while Wesley has continued building a post-Vampire Diaries career that includes acting, directing, and producing work.

The Reunion Comes Nine Years After The Vampire Diaries Ended

Dobrev and Wesley first became a major TV pairing when The Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW in 2009. Dobrev played Elena Gilbert, while Wesley played Stefan Salvatore, one side of the show’s central love triangle with Ian Somerhalder’s Damon Salvatore.

Wesley remained with the series through its eight-season run, while Dobrev left after Season 6 and returned for the 2017 series finale. Entertainment Weekly noted that the Hulu project arrives nine years after The Vampire Diaries ended, giving the new show an obvious reunion angle for longtime fans.

The two actors have also spoken over the years about how their offscreen friendship changed after the early days of the CW drama. In a 2019 appearance on the Directionally Challenged podcast, Dobrev said she and Wesley did not immediately get along while making the show, but later became close friends.

Hulu Has Not Announced a Premiere Date

You Deserve to Know is currently described as being in development at Hulu. No premiere date, full cast list, production start date, trailer, or episode count has been announced.
