Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan trade verses and compete for prizes in the new “expectations” video, turning their latest recording into a sendup of vintage television.
The remix arrived Oct. 15, marking Rodrigo’s first official remix and Roan’s first featured appearance on another artist’s single. Rodrigo announced the collaboration two days earlier, following a studio teaser featuring Roan’s voice.
The original song appeared on Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, released in June. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 equivalent album units.
Dan Nigro, the producer behind much of both singers’ work, produced the recording. Bardia Zeinali directed the accompanying video.
David Byrne Hosts “The Big Expectations Show”
Talking Heads frontman David Byrne plays Johnny Johnson, who greets three versions of Rodrigo dressed in different outfits. His opening questions introduce The Big Expectations Show, one of several fictional competitions featured in the clip.
As PEOPLE reported, the video shifts into a Family Feud-style contest. Called Sister Squabble, it pits the singers’ fictional television families against each other.
A yellow convertible with the license plate “XPECT8NS” becomes one of the prizes. Nigro also appears carrying an oversized cellphone, as Variety noted.
Byrne and Rodrigo previously performed “Burning Down the House” together at Governors Ball in June 2025. He followed that appearance with a cover of “drivers license” in January 2026, part of the fifth-anniversary celebrations for SOUR. As Stereogum reported, the cover was paired with a recording of their festival duet on a seven-inch release.
Roan Adds a Verse About a Date Who Never Calls
Roan takes over the second verse with a story about bringing a woman to a concert, feeling a connection and then waiting three weeks for a promised call.
She also changes the chorus to refer to women. Rodrigo returns alongside her as they sing about becoming more selective after disappointing experiences, with Roan adding vocal flourishes toward the end.
The recording is available to stream, with limited-edition seven-inch vinyl, CDs and cassettes also listed through both artists’ stores. The vinyl pairs the remix with the original recording.
Their Shared Stage History Goes Back to the SOUR Tour
Roan opened a date on Rodrigo’s SOUR Tour in 2022 and later supplied backing vocals on songs including “lacy” and “obsessed.” In 2024, she opened the first 24 dates of the GUTS World Tour.
In an interview with Capital Buzz, Roan confirmed she also sang on Rodrigo’s “Can’t Catch Me Now,” recorded for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
On Aug. 20, 2024, Rodrigo welcomed her back as a special guest at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The two performed “HOT TO GO!” together, leading the crowd through the song’s arm movements.
They also filmed a TikTok skit in which Rodrigo pretended to be a concertgoer hoping the performer would play Roan’s hit. Roan reminded her that they were at an Olivia Rodrigo concert, before the video cut to their actual duet.
More recently, Roan performed at Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival at Great Park in Irvine on Aug. 29, 2026. According to Universal Music, the event raised $20 million for 10 nonprofit organizations supporting women and girls.
Roan Says the Collaboration Made Her Excited to Create Again
The pair joined Zane Lowe via FaceTime to discuss the remix in an Apple Music interview. On Instagram, Rodrigo praised Roan as an inspiring artist and thanked her collaborators. “Getting to make art with people you love is the best feeling ever,” she wrote, according to ABC News.
In her own Instagram post, Roan told Rodrigo she admired her and was grateful for their friendship. After noting how long it had been since she released a song, she said the collaboration made her “excited to create and be a pop girl again.”
