Jonathan Taylor Thomas has made a rare public appearance alongside two people closely connected to his years on Home Improvement.
Patricia Richardson shared a photograph with Thomas and Taran Noah Smith on Instagram on July 29, bringing together the actors who played Jill Taylor and her sons Randy and Mark on the ABC sitcom.
“My other boys,” Richardson captioned the image, adding a heart emoji.
The photograph offered an unusual recent glimpse of both former child actors. Thomas, 44, has spent most of the past two decades outside the public eye, while Smith, 42, left acting after Home Improvement ended in 1999.

Richardson smiled between her former onscreen sons in the photograph. Thomas wore glasses and a dark button-down shirt, while Smith appeared with long hair and a beard.
Richardson, now 75, played Jill throughout all eight seasons of Home Improvement. Thomas portrayed middle son Randy, while Smith played the youngest Taylor brother, Mark.
The sitcom premiered in 1991 and followed Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, played by Tim Allen, as he balanced his television career with life at home with Jill and their three sons. It ended in May 1999 after 204 episodes.
Thomas left as a regular cast member during the final season, making Randy’s absence part of a storyline in which the character joined an environmental study program in Costa Rica. He later returned for a holiday episode but did not appear in the series finale.
Thomas Stepped Away From Fame to Pursue an Education
Thomas became one of the most recognizable young actors of the 1990s through Home Improvement, his role opposite Chevy Chase in Man of the House and his voice performance as young Simba in Disney’s animated version of The Lion King.
“I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old,” Thomas told People in a 2013 interview. “I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break.”
Thomas studied philosophy and history at Harvard University and spent an academic year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He later graduated from Columbia University’s School of General Studies in 2010.
He told the outlet that he enjoyed the experience of sitting in a university library among other students and had no regrets about stepping away from constant celebrity coverage. “I never took the fame too seriously,” he said. “It was a great period in my life, but it doesn’t define me.”
He Reunited With His Television Parents on ‘Last Man Standing’

Thomas briefly returned to television through several appearances on Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing. His first guest appearance aired in 2013 and placed him opposite his former television father. Thomas returned for additional episodes and also directed three installments of the series between 2013 and 2016.
A 2015 episode reunited him with both Allen and Richardson. Richardson played Helen Potts, a character whose son was also named Randy, while Thomas appeared briefly as the restaurant owner who employed Allen’s character.
Richardson said on the Back to the Best podcast in 2024 that she remained in contact with Thomas and understood that his interests had shifted behind the camera. “Jonathan’s not really interested in acting,” she said. “He wants to direct and write.” She added that Smith had also left the profession after growing up on the sitcom.
The Photograph Is Not a Reboot Announcement
Discussion of a possible Home Improvement revival has continued for years, particularly as Allen has publicly suggested revisiting the Taylor family with the original characters at a later stage of their lives. Richardson has repeatedly challenged the impression that a reunion project has been formally developed with the cast.
During her 2024 podcast appearance, she said Allen had publicly discussed a revival without first approaching her or Thomas. “He never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan,” Richardson said.
She also questioned whether recreating the sitcom decades later could reproduce the relationships and circumstances that made the original series work. “People think we can just magically go right back to who we were 30 years ago,” she said. “We did it. We did it well. We quit at the right time before it got really bad, and it should just stay as it is.”
