Prince George will begin at Eton College in September, following the same school path once taken by Prince William.

Kensington Palace confirmed that George, 12, will attend the all-boys boarding school from this fall. The decision ends years of speculation about where Prince William and Kate Middleton would send their eldest child for the next stage of his education.

George currently attends Lambrook School with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

He turns 13 on July 22, making this one of the first major school changes to separate him from the younger Wales children.

George Reportedly Wanted to Follow William’s Footsteps

People reported that a source close to the family said George has “always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.”

William attended Eton as a teenager, and George toured the school with his parents in 2023, just before his 10th birthday. That visit made Eton a strong contender long before the palace confirmed the decision.

People reported that William and Kate also considered other schools, including Marlborough College, which Kate attended. The final choice sends George to the same school William and Prince Harry both attended.

Eton Keeps George Close to Windsor

Reuters reported that Eton is located close to Windsor Castle, west of London. People noted that the school is about 15 minutes from the Wales family’s Windsor residence.

People reported that the family is expected to ease him into boarding life, with weekends and family time helping with the transition.

Charlotte and Louis are expected to remain at Lambrook for now. George’s move means the three Wales children will no longer share the same daily school routine.

The School Has Deep Royal and Political History

Eton was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, according to the school’s official history. It remains one of Britain’s best-known private boarding schools.

Reuters reported that Eton’s annual fees are about £63,000, or roughly $84,500. The school has educated generations of public figures, including William, Harry and multiple British prime ministers.

The choice also marks a different path from King Charles, who attended Gordonstoun in Scotland rather than Eton.

The Move Marks a New Stage for the Future King

George’s move to Eton comes as William and Kate continue giving their eldest child a gradual introduction to public royal life.

He has appeared more often at major royal events in recent years, including Trooping the Colour and major national ceremonies, but his parents have kept his school life largely private.

George is expected to finish his time at Lambrook before beginning at Eton in September.
