Prince Harry’s surprise NBA Finals appearance already stood out because it happened while the royal family was gathered in London for Trooping the Colour. Then a short courtside exchange with Spike Lee gave the night another viral moment.

Harry attended Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on June 13. The Duke of Sussex was seated near NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and U.S. Army veteran JP Lane, according to People.

Page Six reported that Harry’s interaction with Lee spread online after video showed an awkward moment between the two men in the stands.

The clip gave royal watchers and Knicks fans something to dissect on a night that already had a championship, celebrity sightings and Harry’s unexpected Texas appearance competing for attention.

Page Six reported that Lee appeared to reject Harry’s first attempt at a handshake after pointing toward him. In the video, Harry doubled back, extended his hand and then placed a hand awkwardly near Lee’s stomach as the filmmaker continued pointing.

The two ultimately shook hands and continued speaking, according to Page Six, which makes the clip harder to read as a clear insult.

Neither Harry nor Lee publicly explained the exchange at the time of Page Six’s report. The outlet said representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Page Six noted that some viewers wondered whether the conversation involved Harry’s old reported Facebook alias, “Spike Wells.” Lee has joked publicly about that name before, including a 2019 story in which he said he had asked Prince William why Harry used it.

The video does not confirm what Lee said to Harry, and neither man has publicly said whether the old nickname came up.

Harry’s NBA appearance was not a random Texas stop. People reported that he was already in San Antonio for the 2026 Warrior Games and was invited to the NBA Finals by Silver.

He attended the game with Lane, a U.S. Army veteran connected to Harry’s Invictus Games work. Town & Country reported that Lane is a Warrior Games athlete who is set to compete in his first Invictus Games next summer in Birmingham.

The outing happened the same day King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Kate Middleton and other members of the royal family appeared in London for Trooping the Colour. Harry and Meghan Markle were not expected to attend that event after stepping back from royal duties and moving to California.

Harry’s appearance at the NBA Finals added another public sports moment to a calendar already tied closely to veterans’ athletics through Invictus and the Warrior Games.

The Knicks Won

The game itself gave the viral clip a historic backdrop. The NBA reported that the Knicks beat the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to win their first championship since 1973.

Lee, one of the Knicks’ most famous fans, was part of a celebrity-heavy crowd that also included several New York supporters who traveled to San Antonio for the possible title-clinching game.

The Harry-Lee clip had the right mix for quick online spread: royalty, one of New York’s most recognizable basketball fans, a confusing almost-handshake and a Knicks championship night unfolding around them.
