Prince Harry is sharing the simple family tradition that helps keep Princess Diana’s memory present for Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
People reported that Harry spoke about the tradition during Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire, England, on Saturday, July 11.
The Duke of Sussex was asked whether he does anything special on Princess Diana’s birthday, July 1, or on the anniversary of her death, Aug. 31, and he said yes.

“Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake,” Harry told the 16-year-old who asked the question, according to People.
The Duke of Sussex said the tradition means a lot to him because it gives his family a sweet way to remember his mother. “I think traditions are really, really important,” he said, adding, “Especially when they’re sweet.”

The exchange happened during a Q&A with children and families supported by Scotty’s Little Soldiers. People reported that the question came from a 16-year-old named Sebastian, whose father, Rev. John Hill, served in the Royal Navy and died in June 2010.
Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, when Harry was 12. His work with Scotty’s Little Soldiers has long been tied to that experience and to his support for children who lose a parent young.
Scotty’s Little Soldiers Has Personal Meaning for Harry
Harry is a Global Ambassador for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a British charity that supports bereaved military children and young people. People reported that the charity event brought together about 200 children and family members.
The Independent reported that Harry also joined lighter festival activities during the outing, including goat yoga, an inflatable obstacle course and a water-balloon game with children.
During the same Q&A, Harry told the group that grief and loss can feel isolating, but that the Scotty’s community helps remind children they are not alone.
Harry Also Shared How He Handles Difficult Days
Harry was also asked what makes him laugh on a difficult day. People reported that he said his dog and children make him laugh, and that humor can help when someone is ready for it.
The Independent reported that Harry also encouraged the children to move their bodies and talk when grief or stress becomes heavy. He mentioned walking in nature, taking the dog out, swimming in cold water and sharing feelings with others.
