Prince William reportedly had fewer expectations than King Charles that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain would pass without reopening old family tensions.
An unnamed source told Us Weekly that there had been “cautious optimism” around the Sussexes’ homecoming, but William was less convinced. The source described the Prince of Wales as now having an “I told you so” moment as Harry and Meghan once again become part of a wider royal debate.
The couple returned to the U.K. with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in late August after more than six years based primarily in California. Their move put Harry and William in the same country again, but there has been no public sign of a reunion between the brothers.
Buckingham Palace has also moved quickly to separate the Sussexes’ return to Britain from any return to official royal duties. A letter authorized by Charles reaffirmed that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family and continue to pursue their charitable and commercial work independently.
William Was Reportedly Less Optimistic Than Charles

According to the Us Weekly source, some people around the royal family hoped Harry and Meghan could settle back into Britain without immediately reigniting the conflicts that have followed them since they stepped away from working royal life in 2020. William reportedly did not share that confidence.
“There was cautious optimism that perhaps they would arrive in silent dignity and not stir up drama, but William was much less optimistic than the king,” the source said, adding that the Prince of Wales now feels his concerns were justified.
The same insider claims William has not spoken with Harry since his return. A separate Us Weekly report said William and Catherine were surprised by how quickly the Sussexes moved back and were taking a “wait-and-see approach,” with no immediate meeting between the brothers planned.
Harry and William’s estrangement began long before the move. Harry discussed their relationship extensively in his 2023 memoir Spare, including private arguments between them, while he and Meghan also addressed their experiences inside the royal family in interviews and their Netflix docuseries.
Charles Has Made Their Royal Status Explicit
While William’s private reaction comes from unnamed sources, Harry and Meghan’s official position within the monarchy has been addressed directly. A letter written by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon at Charles’ direction reaffirmed that they stopped carrying out representative duties for the sovereign in 2020 and remain non-working royals.
Reuters reported that the guidance described the couple’s position as being “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” Their projects continue independently rather than as engagements carried out on behalf of Charles or the Royal Household.
The letter did not remove any titles or create a new constitutional arrangement. It restated the framework already in place, making clear that moving back to Britain did not restore the public duties Harry and Meghan gave up six years ago.
The way the guidance became public created a separate point of tension. The Associated Press reported that the Sussexes’ representatives received the letter a little more than an hour before it was released to news organizations, and a person familiar with the discussions said the couple were surprised by the process.
Living in Britain Again Has Not Repaired the Brothers’ Relationship
Harry’s return has inevitably raised questions about whether sharing the same country could eventually make a meeting with William more likely, but there is currently no indication that one has been arranged.
Us Weekly’s sources say the relationship remains strained and that William is still wary of his brother. Neither William nor Kensington Palace has publicly commented on the “I told you so” description or confirmed details about private conversations surrounding the Sussexes’ move.
Harry has previously said that reconciliation with members of his family remains important to him. His public comments have also made clear that several disputes, including security and the fallout from his memoir and television interviews, have complicated those relationships.
The family’s new proximity therefore changes the geography without necessarily changing the personal situation. Harry and Meghan are once again based in Britain, but the latest reporting still places the two brothers at a distance from one another.
Harry’s Public Schedule Is Already Filling Up
Being a non-working royal does not mean Harry is stepping away from public appearances. His first slate of engagements after the move includes charity and Invictus-related events in Britain before another trip to the United States.
He is scheduled to attend the WellChild Awards in London on September 21, continuing his long association with the organization. WellChild confirmed that he will meet seriously ill children, their families and professionals who support them during the annual event.
Harry is also expected to attend the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards before traveling to New York for the Clinton Global Initiative later in September. Those appearances will keep him visible soon after the family’s return while remaining separate from the work of the Royal Household.
For William, however, the more immediate issue appears to be personal rather than ceremonial. Us Weekly’s latest source says the brothers still have not spoken since Harry returned, with no meeting currently planned between them.
