Rosanne Cash has postponed three performances after what her management described as an “unexpected medical emergency.”
The 71-year-old singer-songwriter is recovering under her doctors’ supervision, and her medical team has temporarily restricted her from traveling and performing. Her management has not disclosed what happened or provided a diagnosis.
The postponed dates were September 8 in Sheridan, Wyoming, September 9 in Billings, Montana, and September 10 in Bozeman, Montana. Cash’s team said she wants to reschedule the appearances, but replacement dates have not been announced.
Her management identified September 19 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, as her next planned appearance. Arkansas State University continues to list Cash as the host and curator of that night’s Sunken Lands Songwriting Circle.
Doctors Temporarily Restricted Her Travel and Performing

Cash’s management announced the postponements through her official Instagram account on September 7. “Rosanne Cash must postpone her performances due to an unexpected medical emergency,” the statement said.
“She is recovering under her doctors’ supervision, who have recommended a temporary restriction on travel and performing,” her team continued. The restriction affected the Wyoming and Montana portion of her schedule.
Cash’s management said she “deeply regrets” having to postpone the appearances and intends to reschedule them.
The statement did not identify the medical emergency, when it occurred or what treatment Cash is receiving. Her team has not said that she was hospitalized, and Cash has not released a separate personal health update. Entertainment Weekly said it had contacted her management for additional comment.
The Three Shows Are Being Rescheduled
The first affected performance was scheduled for September 8 at the WYO Theater in Sheridan, where Cash was due to perform with her husband and longtime musical collaborator John Leventhal. The WYO Theater now marks the show as postponed.
Cash and Leventhal were then scheduled for September 9 at the Alberta Bair Theater in Billings. That venue also currently labels its Rosanne Cash performance as postponed.
Cash’s management identified a September 10 Bozeman appearance as the third affected date. New dates for the three postponed performances have not been announced.
The shows are being treated as postponements rather than cancellations. Cash’s management said she looks forward to rescheduling the appearances once she is able to travel and perform again.
Her September 19 Jonesboro Appearance Remains Listed
Cash’s management pointed to September 19 as the next planned date on her schedule. The Arkansas State University event page still lists her for the fourth annual Sunken Lands Songwriting Circle at Riceland Hall in Jonesboro.
Cash is scheduled to host and curate the event with Ruthie Foster and Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller. Leventhal will accompany the performers. The concert begins at 7 p.m., following a reception at the Fowler Center.
Proceeds support the Historic Dyess Colony and Johnny Cash Boyhood Home. Cash has hosted the songwriting event since its launch and said when this year’s lineup was announced that she was excited to return to Jonesboro for its fourth edition.
Her later schedule also remains publicly listed. Ticketmaster currently shows European performances beginning in October, and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium still lists Cash among the performers for the November 9 Concert for Cumberland Heights honoring John Hiatt.
Cash Performed at Tanglewood on August 30
Cash was onstage a little more than a week before her management announced the medical emergency. PEOPLE identified her most recent performance as the August 30 Tanglewood concert in Massachusetts during Judy Collins’ Sweet Judy Blue Eyes Farewell Tour.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra, which operates Tanglewood, billed Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter as co-stars for the concert, with Amanda Shires appearing as a special guest.
Cash had continued an active performance schedule throughout the year with Leventhal. Her doctors have now advised her to stop traveling and performing temporarily, with management giving no timetable beyond the currently listed September 19 appearance.
No further information about the medical emergency has been released.
