Sandra Oh says a Grey’s Anatomy fan once told her that Cristina Yang inspired her to leave a relationship and pursue the career her partner wanted her to abandon.
The woman had been preparing to marry a man who told her she would not need to work because he would provide for her. After watching Cristina accept a career-defining opportunity in Switzerland, she began reconsidering the future being planned for her.
“I left him. I became a lawyer,” the fan later told Oh.
Oh shared the encounter during a July 28 appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast, where she reflected on Cristina’s continuing influence more than a decade after leaving the medical drama.
The Fan Told Oh She Had Become a Lawyer
Oh met the woman while making her Metropolitan Opera debut in La Fille du Régiment in 2025. The actress told Ferguson that younger viewers frequently approach her to explain how Grey’s Anatomy or Cristina affected their lives. This woman began by saying she needed to tell Oh about a decision she had faced approximately 10 years earlier.
According to Oh’s recollection, he told the woman that he would take care of her, presenting financial dependence as a reason to abandon her professional ambitions. The fan then began quoting a season 10 scene between Cristina and her former fiancé, Preston Burke, played by Isaiah Washington.
Oh realized that the woman had connected her own circumstances with Cristina’s decision to accept an opportunity matching her abilities and ambition. After hearing that she had left the relationship and become a lawyer, Oh enthusiastically celebrated the choice.
“Good for you, good for you,” Oh recalled responding. She said a partner asking the woman not to become who she was capable of being had not given her enough reason to stay.
Cristina’s Switzerland Opportunity Became the Turning Point
Burke returned near the end of Cristina’s final season, years after abandoning their wedding and leaving Seattle. He invited her to visit the Klausman Institute for Medical Research in Zurich, where he had built an advanced cardiothoracic program. Cristina initially believed Burke wanted her to work alongside him.
He instead offered her control of the institute, explaining that he planned to step away and spend more time with his wife and children. She accepted the offer, left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and relocated to Switzerland at the end of season 10.
Oh Believes Cristina’s Story Was Complete
Oh left Grey’s Anatomy in 2014 after playing Cristina for 10 seasons. She began considering her departure years earlier and worked with creator Shonda Rhimes and the writing team to give the character a planned conclusion. During the podcast interview, Oh said she felt that she had completed her responsibility to Cristina.
“I really did my job,” she said, explaining that the character experienced believable growth across a decade and reached a natural conclusion. Oh described the opportunity to plan Cristina’s departure with the writers as an unusual privilege. Grey’s Anatomy will return for its 23rd season on October 15 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
