Sarah Paulson is remembering the laughter she shared with Diane Keaton on the first anniversary of her longtime friend’s death. In an Oct. 11 Instagram tribute, she shared a photograph of herself with Keaton and the actress’s daughter, Dexter.

“One year. Impossible. Laughing with you will always be what I remember most. I love you,” Paulson wrote, according to Us Weekly.

The pair became friends while making the 1999 film The Other Sister, in which Keaton played the mother of Juliette Lewis’ character and Paulson played her older sister. Their friendship continued for more than 25 years.

Keaton died on Oct. 11, 2025, at age 79. Her family confirmed four days later that she had died from pneumonia, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Speaking to Vogue in 2025, Paulson recalled working on The Other Sister after the rest of the cast had gone home. Keaton changed out of her clothes, got a glass of wine and stayed to help her.

“It was my first understanding of how you can really show up for other actors,” Paulson said.

Paulson Struggled to Discuss the Loss at the All’s Fair Premiere

At the Los Angeles premiere of All’s Fair on Oct. 16, 2025, Paulson became emotional when asked about Keaton. Speaking to Access Hollywood, in an interview covered by TheWrap, she described Keaton as “a very dear friend” and said she was not yet ready to talk about the loss.

“I was the luckiest person in the world to have had her in my life the way that I did,” she said.

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the same event, Paulson said Keaton had been even more remarkable as a friend than she was as a performer.

On Dec. 3, 2025, Paulson honored Keaton at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment gala in Beverly Hills, where she recalled crying when filming ended and Keaton reassuring her that their friendship would continue, Good Morning America reported.

Her reading included messages teasing her about a full voicemail inbox, followed by an imagined email she wished she could send Keaton.

“I love you Mom ❤️ Thinking of you every day ♾️,” he wrote.

Dexter Keaton White shared a separate tribute with a black-and-white photograph from her 2021 wedding to Jordan White. The image showed mother and daughter looking at one another on the wedding day.

Dexter wrote that a year without her mother somehow felt both recent and impossibly long. She missed being able to call her, get a hug or go on adventures together.

Paulson replied beneath Dexter’s post: “Love you sweet Dex.”
