Stephen Root has finally ended one of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s worst-kept casting secrets.
The veteran actor confirmed that he plays Brian Heder in Rockstar Games’ long-awaited sequel, turning more than a year of fan speculation into fact. Root made the admission during an Associated Press interview at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, where he was discussing his Emmy-nominated work on Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay.
Players had suspected Root almost immediately after Brian appeared in the game’s second trailer in May 2025. His distinctive delivery sounded especially familiar to viewers who knew his voice work as Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill.
Root acknowledged that the secret became difficult to preserve once listeners recognized him. Rockstar still has not released a conventional public cast list for GTA VI, even with the game’s Nov. 19 launch approaching.
Root Confirms He Is the Voice Behind Brian Heder
Asked about the game, Root confirmed his involvement with a simple, “You’re gonna see me in there.” He also said he was “so happy to be involved with it” and called the game “an amazing thing to look at.”
Brian Heder is an older smuggler based in the Leonida Keys who is directly connected to protagonist Jason Duval. Rockstar describes him as a veteran drug runner from the Keys’ “golden age of smuggling” who still moves product through a boat yard with his third wife, Lori.
Brian has been in the business long enough to let other people handle much of the dirty work. Jason is one of those people, Brian lets him live rent-free at one of his properties as long as he helps with local shakedowns.
Rockstar also gives Brian the kind of outsized history expected from a Grand Theft Auto character. He claims he once hauled enough marijuana in a plane to make the entire state of Leonida “levitate,” while the studio describes him as looking like “a Leonida beach bum” but moving “like a great white shark.”
Fans Had Already Identified Root From Trailer 2
The confirmation resolves a casting theory that began almost as soon as GTA VI‘s second trailer arrived on May 6, 2025. Brian appears early in the footage interacting with Jason, and viewers quickly began identifying the voice as Root’s. Game Informer noted on the day of the trailer’s release that Brian sounded like the actor.
The resemblance was particularly difficult to miss for longtime King of the Hill viewers. Root has voiced both Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland across the animated series, giving fans decades of material from which to recognize his cadence.
Brian Is Already Embedded in Jason’s Criminal World
Rockstar has not revealed how much of the final game Brian will appear in. What the studio has established is that he sits directly inside Jason’s life when the game begins. Jason grew up around criminals, served in the Army and later found himself back in the Keys working for local drug runners before his relationship with Lucia Caminos pulls him into a much larger criminal conspiracy.
Brian is part landlord, part employer and part underworld connection. Jason lives in one of his properties and carries out jobs for him, making Brian more than a distant figure in Rockstar’s character gallery.
Another introduced character, Cal Hampton, is Jason’s friend and is also connected to Brian. Rockstar’s material therefore places Heder squarely within the network surrounding Jason in the Leonida Keys.
Rockstar Still Hasn’t Published a Full ‘GTA VI’ Cast
The studio has released two trailers, detailed character profiles and, in August, an extended look captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Fans have suggested performers for several characters based on voices, facial similarities and alleged résumé credits.
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos remain the game’s two protagonists, and Rockstar has published extensive story and character material for both without identifying their performers on its official site.
Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for a Nov. 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The company’s support documentation says digital preloading begins at local midnight on Nov. 12.
Root Confirmed the Role While Promoting ‘Widow’s Bay’
Root was speaking with the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party during Emmy weekend, where his recent television work was already giving him plenty to discuss.
Root plays Wyck in Apple TV’s horror-comedy Widow’s Bay, which premiered in April. The Television Academy nominated him for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 2026 Emmys, marking the second Emmy nomination of his career after Barry in 2019.
Apple lists Root alongside Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey in the 10-episode series.
