Taylor Swift used one of the biggest songwriting honors of her career to put her parents’ early sacrifices back at the center of her story.
The singer was inducted into the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday, June 11, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, where she thanked Andrea and Scott Swift, along with her brother Austin, for moving the family from Pennsylvania to Tennessee when she was still trying to break into country music. PEOPLE reported that Swift, 36, became the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Swift said songwriting was the “only thing I ever just naturally did,”. In her speech, she paused on the family decision that put her closer to Nashville’s music industry long before stadium tours, rerecorded albums and record-setting pop releases followed.
“It couldn’t have been easy for my parents and my brother to just pick up and move our entire family from Pennsylvania to relocate to Nashville, so that I could hone my craft in the songwriting capital of the world,” Swift said, according to PEOPLE. “They uprooted their entire lives to move me to Music City, and even though words are supposed to kind of be my thing, I will never be able to express my gratitude to you guys for doing that for me.”
Swift Connected the Honor to Her Family’s Move to Nashville
Swift was raised with Austin on a 15-acre Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania before the family moved to Hendersonville, just outside Nashville. PEOPLE reported that the move came after Swift became the youngest person to sign with Sony/ATV Publishing at age 14.
Andrea later told Entertainment Weekly that the family tried to keep the move from feeling like pressure on Taylor. She said they described it as “a change of scenery,” because they did not want Taylor to carry guilt if the career gamble did not work out. Scott also moved his financial advisory business, The Swift Group under Merrill Lynch, to Tennessee.
Andrea had already been helping Taylor chase a record deal before the move. PEOPLE reported that she drove Taylor to Nashville as a child so she could hand out demos on Music Row, while Austin waited in the car with their mother.
Andrea Swift Has Been Part of Taylor’s Music for Years
Swift has written about her family before, most directly in “The Best Day,” the Fearless song built around childhood memories with Andrea. When Swift released “The Best Day (Taylor’s Version)” in 2021, the lyric video used home movies of Taylor with Andrea, Scott and Austin.
PEOPLE reported that the lyric video included previously unseen family footage, including a clip that matches the song’s childhood image of a paint set in the kitchen.
Swift has also described Andrea as central to her personal decision-making. In a 2020 Variety interview quoted by PEOPLE, Swift called her mother her “guiding force” and said she talks to Andrea about almost every decision.
Her Parents’ Health Scares Became Public Over Time
Swift first told fans in 2015 that Andrea had been diagnosed with cancer, writing at the time that her mother wanted people to know why she might not attend as many shows. In a 2019 essay for Elle, Swift said Andrea’s cancer had returned and wrote that her mother’s illness had changed the way she thought about worry and priorities.
In that same essay, Swift said Scott had also previously been diagnosed with cancer, though she did not share specific details about his health. Swift later told Variety that Andrea had been diagnosed with a brain tumor while undergoing cancer treatment, saying the symptoms were different from what the family had experienced before.
Swift shared another family-health update in 2025 during an appearance on New Heights, when she said Scott had undergone quintuple bypass surgery after doctors found five blockages in his heart. PEOPLE reported that Swift, Andrea and Austin took shifts with Scott in the ICU and essentially moved in with him while he recovered.
Swift described the recovery as a parent-child reversal. She said Scott had built play sets, swing sets and cribs for her when she was young, while she was later building his shower chair, walker and adjustable bed after surgery.
Scott and Andrea Stayed Visible During the Eras Tour
Andrea and Scott were also present throughout parts of the Eras Tour, where they became familiar figures to fans without becoming the main event. PEOPLE reported that Swift made Scott a “D.O.H. Pass” for opening night of the tour in March 2023, with “Dad of Headliner” written below in her handwriting.
“Made my Dad’s tour credential,” Swift wrote on Instagram Stories at the time. “We are a small family business.”
Their appearances continued as the tour became a defining part of Swift’s career. PEOPLE reported that Swift gave her parents a shout-out during a Houston show in April 2023, performed “The Best Day” on Mother’s Day in Philadelphia, and later posted a TikTok of Scott riding a Segway backstage after a Santa Clara concert.
Scott and Andrea also attended the Los Angeles premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film in October 2023. PEOPLE reported that they were later spotted in Vancouver in December 2024 during one of Swift’s final Eras Tour shows.
Her Parents Have Also Appeared Alongside Travis Kelce

Swift’s parents have also appeared in public moments connected to Travis Kelce. Scott attended a Kansas City Chiefs game in 2023, and Andrea later joined Taylor at another game alongside Donna Kelce.
After the 2024 Super Bowl, Swift posted a TikTok showing Kelce, Andrea and Scott at a Las Vegas after-party. Good Morning America reported that the video showed Kelce in a packed club before the camera moved to Swift’s parents sitting in a booth and then to Swift making an awkward face.
“Accidentally going clubbing with your parents is something everyone should try at least once in their life,” Swift captioned the post.
