Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is back at No. 1 worldwide eight weeks after arriving in theaters.
The film earned an estimated $45.96 million globally over the September 4 through 6 weekend, edging Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $44.1 million. Entertainment Weekly reported that it was the first weekend since Brand New Day opened that another movie finished ahead of it globally.
Spider-Man remains far ahead over its full theatrical run. Box Office Mojo lists the Marvel and Sony release at $2.408 billion worldwide, compared with $1.632 billion for The Odyssey.
Tom Holland and Zendaya are part of both films. Holland plays Telemachus in Nolan’s epic and Peter Parker in Brand New Day, while Zendaya appears as Athena in The Odyssey and returns as MJ in the superhero film.
‘The Odyssey’ Won the Weekend by Less Than $2 Million
Deadline reported $45.96 million worldwide for The Odyssey, putting it about $1.86 million ahead of Brand New Day.
Nolan’s film earned approximately $33 million from international markets and $13 million in North America. Brand New Day remained the stronger film domestically with $18 million, while its overseas markets contributed another $26.1 million.
Japan helped The Odyssey before its full release there. Exclusive previews across 62 IMAX screens earned about $755,000 ahead of the nationwide opening on September 11.
‘Spider-Man’ Is Still No. 3 Worldwide All Time
The weekend loss did little to close the distance between the two films. Box Office Mojo currently lists Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $2.408 billion worldwide, making it the third highest grossing movie in history behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
The Odyssey has reached $1.632 billion and sits at No. 14 on the same all time chart. The difference between their current worldwide totals is approximately $776.5 million.
For 2026 alone, Brand New Day ranks first worldwide and The Odyssey second. Nolan’s adaptation has already become the highest grossing film of his career.
‘The Odyssey’ Has Passed $1 Billion Outside North America
International audiences have contributed more than $1.04 billion to The Odyssey. Its largest overseas markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland, China and France.
IMAX has been another major part of the run. By early September, the film had earned more than $457 million from IMAX screens worldwide, according to PEOPLE.
The Odyssey is also the first theatrical feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. IMAX developed new camera technology for Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema during production.
