President Donald Trump’s hands are trending again, and this White House photo cycle somehow turned into a full internet group project within hours.

On Wednesday, May 6, during a White House event honoring military mothers, Getty photographer Anna Moneymaker captured an image that independent journalist Aaron Rupar immediately posted on X with the caption: “Yikes! Both of Trump’s hands are discolored today, and one of them appears bruised as well.”

And because the internet treats presidential photos like they are hidden clues in a prestige HBO drama, the reaction machine kicked into overdrive almost instantly. That single post hit 1.3 million views by 9:40 p.m. ET the same night it was uploaded. As of today, it has climbed to 2.4 million views, 6,700 likes, and 759 replies, with people continuing to dissect every visible inch of concealer like beauty influencers reviewing a failed foundation launch.

Trump’s right hand showed a visible break in the makeup coverage with a dark bruise still peeking through underneath, and BuzzFeed’s recent post pointed out that the left hand appeared to be wearing an entirely different shade of concealer. So now the internet has officially moved from “What happened to his hand?” to “Why are both hands involved, and why do they look like they were finished by two separate makeup trailers?”

So What Exactly Was Going On In This Photo?

The image showed Trump standing at the presidential podium with both hands visible, both discolored, and both covered with what appears to be a shiny layer of makeup that did not blend properly with the rest of his skin. The right hand, especially, drew attention because the concealer appeared to separate into one section, leaving the bruise underneath clearly visible in the final image.

Naturally, the comment sections wasted absolutely no time. A Republican PAC formed by Trump opponents, The Lincoln Project, responded: “Every journalist should be asking what the hell is going on with this guy’s health that they aren’t telling us.” Meanwhile, conservative outlet The Bulwark added: “Why are both of Trump’s hands covered in makeup? This new bruising comes as Trump made an unscheduled visit to the ‘dentist’ last weekend, which fueled even more speculation and questions surrounding his health.”

Then came the internet comments, which arrived with the exact level of restraint everyone expected. One X user summed up the collective reaction with: “You would think the White House could find a makeup professional that could match his skin tone. They just using latex house paint now? S**t looks ridiculous.”

Another commenter immediately veered into conspiracy theory territory with: “Maybe some of those ‘reptilians amongst us’ stories are true, and Trump will soon shed his skin.” Because once presidential concealer becomes visible from Getty-distance photography, the internet always finds a way to turn the timeline into a live episode of reality television.

This Story Actually Started More Than a Year Ago

The wildest part of this entire saga is that this did not suddenly appear out of nowhere this week. The bruising first became a major public story in February 2025, when Trump hosted French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, and photographers captured a dark bruise on Trump’s right hand, already partially covered with makeup.

The Getty Images caption attached to those photos stated plainly: “Makeup covers a bruise on the back of U.S. President Donald Trump’s hand.” That wording did not come from critics online or political opponents trying to stir things up. It came directly from the professional caption filed into the Getty archive alongside the photographs.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later addressed the situation in statements to both Fox News Digital and NBC News, saying: “President Trump has bruises on his hand because he’s constantly working and shaking hands all day every day.” That same explanation has continued to resurface across multiple incidents and press briefings over the past fifteen months.

Still, the questions lingered because the bruise remained visible weeks later. On March 12, 2025, photographers again captured bruising during Trump’s meeting with Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin. And since the internet notices patterns faster than streaming fandoms spot continuity errors, the repeated makeup coverage became part of the story itself.

Now Both Hands Have Officially Entered the Chat

What made the May 6 photos explode harder than the earlier rounds of speculation is that the left hand has now joined the conversation. Throughout most of 2025, the visible bruising and makeup coverage centered mainly on Trump’s right hand. This latest event, however, showed both hands appearing discolored and covered with visibly different shades of concealer, and the internet immediately noticed the upgrade.

One commenter even wrote: “No wonder Trump formed MAGA: he needed people to wipe his ass since his hands no longer work.” Another user posted: “He’s rotting from the inside out.” And because no internet pile-on stays remotely normal for long, one commenter added: “I think it’s clear to any serious observer that our President is undergoing hand reduction surgery, to make his micro penis feel larger.”

For context, Trump confirmed in January 2026 that he takes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily, against his doctor’s specific advice. The White House also disclosed in July 2025 that Trump had been diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency, a circulatory condition common in people over 70 that is linked to bruising and swelling.

Even with those disclosures, the official White House position remains that Trump’s hands are fine. That has not stopped online reactions from spiraling further anyway. One final commenter summed up the mood with: “Soon they will be replaced by hooks.”

The Makeup Became the Bigger Story

Now, the reason this story keeps surviving multiple news cycles has less to do with one bruise and more to do with the growing visual pattern attached to it.

The White House has confirmed a diagnosis, confirmed that Trump takes a nonstandard aspirin dosage against his doctor’s advice, and confirmed that makeup has been used at official public events. Yet there still has not been a detailed public explanation of who applies the concealer, why the shades keep appearing mismatched during high-profile appearances, or whether any updated treatment has been implemented since the condition first became public.

And because the internet treats every presidential image like forensic evidence, this photo immediately became the subject of another round of public scrutiny, political jokes, medical speculation, and meme-fueled commentary, all happening at once.
