ZZ Top abruptly canceled its Hollywood Bowl concert with Cheap Trick after undisclosed personnel issues created what frontman Billy Gibbons described as “insurmountable obstacles.”
The bands had been scheduled to perform at the Los Angeles venue on Wednesday, August 5th. The Hollywood Bowl now lists the entire event as canceled rather than postponed.
ZZ Top’s management did not identify the person involved or explain whether the problem was medical, personal or logistical.
The band has not announced a replacement Hollywood Bowl date or said whether the issue will affect its remaining tour schedule.

“ZZ Top management have just announced that the band’s concert with Cheap Trick at the Hollywood Bowl slated for today, August 5, has been cancelled,” the band’s statement read. “The ZZ Top tour has unforeseen personnel matters that have forced the band to cancel its appearance at the Los Angeles landmark.”
Gibbons acknowledged the disruption in a separate message but did not provide additional details. “Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance,” he said. “Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption.”
The Hollywood Bowl Is Issuing Automatic Refunds
The concert had been scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and Cheap Trick appearing as the special guest. The Hollywood Bowl’s official event page says all tickets will be refunded automatically to the original payment method.
Transportation and parking passes are also included in the refunds. Ticket holders do not need to submit a request or take any other action. The venue advised customers to allow five to seven business days for the money to be processed.
Cheap Trick Moved to the Troubadour

Cheap Trick responded to the cancellation by arranging a smaller performance at the Troubadour in West Hollywood for the same night. The Troubadour appearance was a separate Cheap Trick concert and did not include ZZ Top.
“In place of the now canceled scheduled Aug 5th show, we will be playing a very special, intimate show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood!” the band announced. “Come down for a very special evening with us!”
ZZ Top’s official tour calendar continues to list an August 7th performance at the Saroyan Theater in Fresno, California. The schedule also includes concerts at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga on August 8th and the Fruit Yard Amphitheatre in Modesto on August 9th.
