Anne Hathaway is opening up about why her third pregnancy feels both surprising and deeply meaningful.
People reported that Hathaway, 43, spoke about expecting another baby with husband Adam Shulman while attending the New York City premiere of The Odyssey.
Entertainment Weekly previously covered Hathaway’s playful explanation that she and Shulman have been calling the baby their “buzzer-beater.”
Hathaway Said Their Expectations Were Realistic
Hathaway told Access Hollywood that she and Shulman decided to see where life took them, but with what she described as a very low expectation.
She explained that hope can feel small at a certain age, which made the pregnancy feel even more emotional for the couple. The actress said she and Shulman are overjoyed and do not take the news for granted.
The “Buzzer-Beater” Nickname Still Fits
Hathaway had already shared a lighter version of the story during a July 14 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. She joked that she and Shulman knew what they were doing, but were still shocked that the pregnancy happened.
That is where the “buzzer-beater” nickname comes in. The phrase usually describes a basketball shot made just before time runs out, making it a playful way for the New York Knicks-loving couple to describe the timing of baby No. 3.
Meyers immediately understood the joke, and Hathaway leaned into the idea that the baby arrived in the family story at a surprising final-second moment.
She Asked Seth Meyers About Life With Three Kids
Because Meyers is also a parent of three, Hathaway asked him what she should expect. Entertainment Weekly reported that Meyers told her parenting three kids eventually starts to feel like going on autopilot and watching a show unfold.
Hathaway seemed to enjoy the comparison. She joked that she already loves the “channel” she is watching, while Meyers described the new baby as a new cast member joining the family lineup.

Hathaway announced her pregnancy on Instagram in June, showing her baby bump in a flowing white dress. She and Shulman, who married in 2012, are already parents to sons Jonathan and Jack.
The update comes as Hathaway promotes The Odyssey, one of her biggest film projects. People reported that a source said Hathaway has been focused on family while also handling the press tour with gratitude and professionalism.
The Odyssey opened in theaters July 17.
