Never bet against James Cameron. It is a rule that Hollywood has learned the hard way, time and time again. 2026 is no exception. Avatar: The Way of Water has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The sci-fi epic reached the milestone late Sunday night, just 17 days after its December 19 release.
This achievement puts Cameron in a league entirely of his own. He is now the first director in history to helm four consecutive billion-dollar films. This streak includes Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and now Fire and Ash. While other directors have multiple hits, no one has maintained a perfect batting average on this scale for nearly three decades.

The film has grossed an estimated $1.083 billion worldwide as of Monday morning. The split includes approximately $306 million from domestic theaters and a staggering $777 million from international markets.
While these numbers are massive, they track slightly behind the blistering pace of The Way of Water, which hit the billion-dollar mark in just 14 days. However, box office analysts note that the franchise’s post-holiday legs are legendary. With little competition on the horizon until February, Fire and Ash is poised to dominate screens for weeks to come.
The film is currently the third release of 2025 to join the billion-dollar club, following the massive success of Zootopia 2 and the live-action Lilo & Stitch.

Critics and audiences alike have praised the film for taking the franchise in a grittier direction. After exploring the forests and the oceans, Fire and Ash introduces the Ash People (the Mangkwan clan). They are a volcanic Na’vi tribe that challenges the “noble savage” trope established in the first two films.
Led by Oona Chaplin’s fierce matriarch Varang, the Ash People have proven to be formidable antagonists. The storyline sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) caught between the RDA and this new, aggressive faction. It has sparked intense debate online. Many fans are calling it the Empire Strikes Back of the series because it is darker, more complex, and emotionally heavy.
Before the release, Cameron hinted that the future of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 depended on the financial performance of this film. “We have to see if there is an appetite,” he told Empire magazine last year.
With $1 billion in the bank in under three weeks, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Production on Avatar 4 is already well underway, with a scheduled release for December 2029. This success ensures that audiences will definitely see the conclusion of the Sully family’s saga.
For now, Cameron remains the undisputed king of the box office. As the Na’vi say, “Oel ngati kameie.” The world clearly sees him too.
