Bridgerton Season 5 is officially in production, but Netflix has not yet revealed a complete list of familiar faces returning to the ton.
Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza will lead the new season as Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling. Netflix has also announced three recurring guest stars whose characters will expand the women’s family and social circles.
Nicola Coughlan has confirmed that Penelope Bridgerton will appear, although she expects to have considerably less screen time. Original series lead Phoebe Dynevor remains open to playing Daphne again but said she still has not received an invitation from the production.
The season is filming outside London and will premiere in 2027. Netflix has not announced a more specific release date.
Francesca and Michaela Will Lead Season 5
Season 5 begins two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling. The widowed countess decides to return to the marriage market for practical reasons, but Michaela’s return to London to manage the Kilmartin estate forces her to reconsider those plans.
The storyline is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, which originally centered on Francesca and John’s male cousin Michael Stirling. The Netflix adaptation introduced Michaela at the end of Season 3 and will make her romance with Francesca the show’s first same-gender central love story.
Showrunner Jess Brownell told Netflix’s Tudum that the season will feature “big-time yearning” while remaining focused on romance and happiness. “It’s going to be a season about queer joy,” Brownell said. “It is not going to be a season about queer trauma.”
Three New Characters Are Joining the Ton
Netflix has announced Tega Alexander, Jacqueline Boatswain and Gemma Knight Jones as recurring guest stars. Alexander will play Christopher Anderson, the son of Lord Marcus Anderson. Netflix describes him as a charming Regency-era bachelor whose confident exterior conceals doubts that could threaten to undo him.
Boatswain will appear as Helen Stirling, Michaela’s vivacious and forceful mother. She intends to guide and occasionally push her daughter through another London social season.
Knight Jones will portray Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, an old friend who becomes Michaela’s confidante and guide to society. Beneath her playful manner, Elizabeth understands the unspoken rules governing life among the ton.
Nicola Coughlan Expects a Much Smaller Role
Coughlan confirmed her return during an April 29 appearance on the Dish from Waitrose podcast. “Season five had started filming already, so I won’t be in it very much,” she said. Coughlan added that she remains happy to revisit the series even when Penelope is no longer driving its central romance.
Phoebe Dynevor Says She Has Not Been Invited Back
Dynevor led the first season as Daphne Bridgerton and returned in a supporting capacity for Season 2. She has not appeared since then, despite several of Daphne’s siblings continuing to return after completing their own love stories.
In an April interview with Collider, Dynevor said her absence was not the result of rejecting an offer. “I just want to say I have not received a call,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “And when I get that call, I will be there if I can.”
Victor Alli Has Said Goodbye to John Stirling
John’s death in Season 4 provides the emotional starting point for Francesca and Michaela’s story. Although his influence will remain important to both women, Victor Alli has spoken about completing his run as the character.
“All great things do come to an end,” Alli told Town & Country while reflecting on his final days with the cast. Netflix has not confirmed Alli for Season 5, including any appearance through a memory or flashback.
