Britney Spears Says She ‘Failed as a Mother’ After Son Told Her He Believes in Science, Not God

Britney Spears says a recent conversation with one of her sons left her feeling that she had “failed as a mother,” prompting an emotional apology to her children and another painful look back at her own parents and the years she says she spent without control over major parts of her life.

The 44-year-old singer shared the lengthy statement on X on August 7th alongside an old photograph of sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19. Spears said one of the boys recently told her that his outlook was based on science and that he did not personally believe in God.

“In that moment I believed I had failed as a mother,” she wrote, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Spears went on to apologize to her children for mistakes she believes she made in the past while describing how deeply her own faith, her parents’ treatment of her and the years surrounding her conservatorship continue to shape the way she looks back on motherhood.

A Conversation With One of Her Sons Hit Spears Hard

Spears said the conversation happened the previous week, although she did not identify whether she was speaking with Sean or Jayden. She recalled that “it was all science” for her son and that “he didn’t personally believe in God.” For Spears, who said she prays every day, the response immediately became a question about her own parenting.

She wrote that she believes there is “a Holy Spirit that sits high in the kingdom of heaven,” adding that her own spiritual experiences have made that belief deeply personal. The conversation then led into a broader apology. “I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I’m sorry for my mistakes in the past,” Spears wrote, as InStyle reported.

This is not the first time Spears has used the phrase “failed as a mother” while discussing her relationship with her sons. In 2022, after Jayden spoke publicly about their strained relationship and defended some members of Spears’ family, she responded that if he believed what her parents had done to her was acceptable, “then yes, I have failed as a mother.”

She Says Her Parents Took Her Sons on ‘Secret’ Beach Outings

Spears began Friday’s message by looking back at Sean and Jayden when they were young. She claimed she discovered about five years ago that her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, had been taking her sons to the beach without her knowing.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t until five years ago that I saw they were secretly taken to the beach by my mom and dad,” she wrote. Spears described seeing photographs from what she characterized as repeated summer outings and questioning why she had not been included.

“I wondered why I wasn’t a part of their cool secret outings,” she wrote. She said the discovery made her feel “demoralized” and claimed that she “went to my knees and cried for two months.”

Spears Recalled Being Barred From a Diner and a New Friendship

The beach memories led Spears to describe another period when she says her father restricted seemingly ordinary parts of her life. She recalled making a new friend and going to a diner for a hamburger after, in her words, having been “held in my home for 4 months.”

According to Spears, paparazzi attention surrounding the outing angered Jamie. She claimed her father subsequently prevented her from seeing the friend again and from returning to the diner.

“I was never allowed to see my friend again or go out to old fashioned hamburger diners,” she wrote. “If you know me I love food.” Entertainment Weekly reported that representatives for Britney, Jamie and Lynne Spears did not immediately respond to requests for comment about her latest allegations.

She Says She Was ‘Brainwashed Into an Ignorant System’

Spears then broadened her reflection beyond individual family memories. “I never got to be me, the real Spears,” she wrote. She described herself when she was younger as intelligent, passionate and “hungry for life,” contrasting that person with how she says she later felt while other people exercised control over her decisions.

“I used to be unbelievably intelligent and 100 percent I was brainwashed into an ignorant system where every goddamn person took advantage of me,” she wrote. Spears also looked back at her career and said her mindset during years of performing did not always reflect what she actually wanted.

“Not one time in those 15 years was it ever me,” she claimed, adding that she felt “shamed, embarrassed, and forced” through parts of that period. Her conservatorship began in 2008 and placed significant control over her personal and financial affairs in the hands of others, with Jamie serving in a central role for much of its existence.

After Spears delivered explosive testimony about the arrangement in court in 2021, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny terminated the conservatorship that November.

Spears Says She Knows She Cannot Get Those Years Back

In Friday’s post, Spears acknowledged that revisiting the past cannot restore what she believes she lost. She wrote that she misses “the excitement in my eyes being alive when I was younger,” remembering herself as someone eager to please and intensely passionate about life.

Spears said she knows she will “never get those years back,” but added that she was proud of herself for publicly discussing what happened because she still considers it deeply painful.

Her conclusion shifted away from the image of Britney Spears as a performer. “As people we all want a hero or someone to look up to but we’re just people at the end of the day,” she wrote. “We’re all stars in my eyes cuz I’m simply mamma now.”

Jayden began reconnecting with his mother in late 2024. A source told PEOPLE in November of that year that he had been visiting Spears at her Los Angeles home and that spending time together had “made her happy.” Spears subsequently began sharing occasional glimpses of Jayden again and publicly praised his musical abilities.

By March 2026, both sons were spending time with her publicly. On March 30th, Spears shared photographs and videos from a yacht outing with Sean and Jayden. One clip showed both brothers beside their mother, while other images captured Sean with his arm around her.

Days earlier, Spears had shared another video with Jayden and described spending time with family and friends as “such a blessing.” Sean and Jayden have also begun developing public careers of their own. On June 26th, both brothers made their runway debuts together at the Vetements Spring/Summer 2027 menswear show during Paris Fashion Week.
