Jessica Turned Professional While Studying at Duke

Jessica began riding lessons at five and progressed through junior competitions before representing the United States internationally. Her early results included winning the 2008 ASPCA Maclay Finals, according to US Equestrian.

She continued competing while studying psychology at Duke University, where she graduated in 2014. She turned professional midway through college and was an alternate for the U.S. team at the 2012 London Olympics.

In an interview with Equestrian Living quoted by Duke, Jessica said she wanted to experience college and discover whether another subject interested her as much as riding. She enjoyed studying, but nothing displaced the sport as her main passion.

Her Olympic debut came at the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, where she won team jumping silver riding Don Juan van de Donkhoeve. She and the same horse later won the 2023 Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of London.

Nicola’s Father Competed at Four Olympics

Philippaerts grew up in a Belgian equestrian family. His father, Ludo, represented the country at four Olympic Games, while his twin brother, Olivier, also became an international show jumper.

Nicola won the 2024 Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Mexico City and finished second at the tour’s 2025 Valkenswaard Grand Prix, according to Global Champions.

Bruce Has Spoken About Watching Sam Become a Father

Sam welcomed daughter Lily Harper Springsteen, Bruce and Patti’s first grandchild, in 2022.

Patti announced Lily’s arrival that July with photographs of Sam and his partner pushing a stroller and a separate image of the newborn. She captioned the post “Walking the baby,” Vanity Fair reported at the time.

During his June 11, 2025, appearance on IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Bruce said watching his youngest son with Lily gave him great pride. He described Sam as “a better dad than I was” already.

Bruce also credited Patti with teaching him to be fully present with their children. He recalled once prioritizing songwriting, then realizing that a good song could wait while his children’s early years were passing, as Business Insider reported.

He began changing his behavior after recognizing that Evan had learned to put off spending time together by watching him. Bruce said he made a point of interrupting his work when his children needed him.
