Cardi B is trying to explain her side of the fallout with Latto after the Atlanta rapper confirmed that a line on “Gimme Dat” was about their private friendship tension becoming public.

The exchange started moving again after Latto appeared on The Breakfast Club and said the lyric was connected to Cardi’s leaked phone call from September 2025. People reported that Cardi then responded in a lengthy post on X, saying she understood why Latto felt hurt and had apologized publicly because the disrespect had become public.

Cardi also said she had tried to take responsibility privately, but that repairing the situation looked different to each of them.

Latto Confirmed “Gimme Dat” Was About Cardi

“Gimme Dat” appears on Latto’s new album Big Mama, which was released on May 29. The lyric that drew attention referenced someone talking about buying “Big Mama” a bag, which listeners quickly connected to Cardi’s earlier public apology.

TMZ reported that Latto confirmed the line was about Cardi during her Breakfast Club interview, but she pushed back against calling it a traditional diss.

Latto said the song reflected what was happening in her life at the time. She also said Cardi was someone she had genuinely looked at as a friend, which made the leaked comment hurt more than a random industry shot would have.

The Fallout Began With a Leaked Phone Call

The tension began after a leaked September 2025 phone call in which Cardi made a disrespectful reference to Latto while talking about Ice Spice.

Cardi apologized publicly soon afterward, writing that she respected Latto and was not too proud to apologize to someone she valued. People reported that the timing was especially awkward because Cardi and Latto had recently worked together on “ErrTime (Remix)” for Cardi’s Am I the Drama? (Ultimate Edition).

What might have stayed behind the scenes became a public relationship rupture once the call circulated online.

Cardi Says She Tried to Reach Out Privately

In her new response, Cardi said she did not mean to harm Latto on the call and that there was a difference between what she said and what she meant. She also said she was overwhelmed and emotional when the call came out, while making clear that was not an excuse.

Cardi added that she had tried to take responsibility after the public apology. Just Jared reported that Cardi said she spoke with Latto’s manager and sister, texted Latto directly, and “always wanted to make it right.”

She also said she wanted to connect with Latto, but felt Latto chose to address the situation on the album.

Latto Said the Friendship Had Been Real

Latto’s comments stood out because she did not describe Cardi as a random rival. She said they had been on texting terms and that she had viewed Cardi as a real friend.

REVOLT reported that Latto used the Breakfast Club interview to speak more broadly about Big Mama, motherhood, privacy, 21 Savage, and how much of her real life ended up in the album.

That context matters for “Gimme Dat.” Latto said people are hearing the song now, but she made it when the situation was still active in her life. She said it was not a diss, but a reflection of what she was feeling at the time.

Cardi’s response and Latto’s interview both leave room for a future conversation, but neither side is pretending everything is fixed.

Latto said she is open to talking at some point, though she also said life has moved on and she is now focused on motherhood. Cardi, meanwhile, said she still has love and respect for Latto and wanted to make things right.

The disagreement now seems less like a traditional rap battle and more like a friendship that became messy in public, then ended up inside the music.

For now, the cleanest version is this: Latto confirmed the “Gimme Dat” lyric was about Cardi, Cardi says she tried to apologize and reach out, and both rappers are framing the tension as more complicated than a simple diss record.
