CM Punk’s absence from WWE television has a clearer explanation after several days of online rumor-chasing around his status with the company.
The former World Heavyweight Champion has not appeared on WWE programming since the Raw after WrestleMania 42, where WWE teased a possible future match between Punk and Cody Rhodes. That gap left room for speculation about creative frustration, WrestleMania politics, a possible pay-cut dispute, and even release talk.
The latest reporting points in a less dramatic direction. WhatCulture, citing WrestleVotes Live on Fightful Select, reported that Punk is taking a “well-deserved rest” and is expected back “right at the top of the card.”
A separate Cageside Seats write-up, citing PWInsider, pushed back even harder on the louder rumors. That report said there are no issues between Punk and WWE, new merchandise is being prepared, and Punk appearances are set for this summer, although exact dates were not specified.
The Cody Rhodes Tease Made the Break Stand Out

Punk’s time away drew more attention because WWE appeared to set up a major next step immediately after WrestleMania. On the April 20 Raw, WWE’s recap said Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes confronted Punk after Punk lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42.
Cageside Seats described the segment as a setup for Rhodes vs. Punk, with Rhodes telling Punk they could have the match whenever Punk wanted it. Punk smiled and walked away, leaving the match without a confirmed date but clearly keeping him close to WWE’s main-event picture.
That is why the absence became louder than a standard post-WrestleMania break. Punk had just lost the World Heavyweight Championship, moved directly into Rhodes’ orbit, and then disappeared from television for more than seven weeks.
The Pay-Cut and Release Talk Remains Unconfirmed
The most important caution is that the bigger claims around Punk have not been confirmed by reliable public reporting. Cageside Seats’ June 10 rumor roundup summarized unsubstantiated talk that Punk may have been unhappy about WrestleMania politics, may have been asked to take a pay cut, or may have considered asking for his release. The same roundup also noted that some of that talk had already been cooled down.
That makes the phrasing important. It is fair to say Punk’s absence sparked rumors about creative frustration, pay cuts, and release talk. It is not safe to say those things happened. The stronger sourced version is that WrestleVotes described the break as planned time off, while PWInsider’s reporting says there are no issues between Punk and WWE.
Punk’s history makes those rumors easier to spread. His original WWE exit in 2014, his years away from the company, and his reputation for turning real-life tension into television all give fans reasons to overread silence. None of that changes what the current reporting says: WWE is still expected to use him near the top of the card.
Punk’s WWE Return Was Publicly Strong Before the Break

The public version of Punk’s recent WWE run does not match the most dramatic online theories. In January, GQ profiled Punk as the cover star of WWE 2K26 and described him as a 47-year-old performer back at the top of WWE after a return that once seemed unlikely.
2K also announced Punk as the Standard Edition cover star for WWE 2K26, with the game built around a “Punked” Showcase mode focused on major moments from his career. That placement came during the same run that led to Punk entering WrestleMania 42 as World Heavyweight Champion before losing the title to Reigns.
For now, the cleanest version of the story is also the least explosive one. Punk has been off television since WWE teased Rhodes vs. Punk, but current reporting says the absence is time off rather than a confirmed backstage crisis. If WWE brings him back around a Rhodes program or another summer appearance, the weeks of speculation may only make the return louder.
