The couple first met at a house party hosted by Cox in 2013. They got engaged nine months later, called off the engagement in late 2015, and reconciled the following year.

They did not get engaged again after their reconciliation, but they remained together for years. People reported that they were last seen publicly together at the U.S. Open in September 2025.

Cox and McDaid began dating in late 2013 after meeting at a star-studded party at Cox’s home. The relationship moved quickly, and the couple announced their engagement in 2014.

The engagement ended in late 2015. Cox and McDaid later got back together in 2016, though People reported that they chose not to get engaged again.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Cox said in a 2019 interview that their relationship was “better than it was before” after they reunited.

Cox Later Discussed Their Therapy Breakup

Cox spoke in 2024 about the earlier breakup during an appearance on Minnie Driver’s Minnie Questions podcast. People reported at the time that Cox said McDaid ended their engagement in the first minute of a couples therapy session.

“We broke up in therapy,” Cox said. “I didn’t know it was coming, whether I should have or not.”

She said she was shocked and in pain, but later viewed the breakup as a turning point. Cox said it pushed her to work on her voice, boundaries, and relationship patterns before she and McDaid reunited.

McDaid supported Cox when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2023. People also reported that Cox celebrated McDaid’s birthday on Instagram in July 2025. “Happy birthday to the man who can do most anything,” Cox wrote in that post, according to People. “I love you always J.”

The pair were later photographed together at the U.S. Open on Sept. 6, 2025.

The Split Ends One of Cox’s Longest Public Relationships

Cox was previously married to David Arquette, her Scream costar. The former couple share daughter Coco Arquette. McDaid is a member of Snow Patrol and has also written songs for artists including Ed Sheeran and P!nk.

People confirmed Cox and McDaid’s split on June 27. Neither Cox nor McDaid has publicly commented on the breakup.
