Piers Morgan reacted sharply after reports that Prince Harry’s request for extra U.K. security had been rejected before his planned July visit.

The Duke of Sussex is expected to return to Britain for events tied to the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet were also expected to travel, but reports now say the family’s attendance is uncertain because of the security decision.

The Sun reported that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, turned down Harry’s requests for protection ahead of the trip.

Morgan responded on X after The Sun’s royal editor Matt Wilkinson shared the report. “Good. Why the hell should we pay for his security?” Morgan wrote.

Morgan Questioned Who Should Pay for Harry’s Security

The Sun reported that Harry is still expected to travel to Britain, but Meghan and the children’s attendance is being reassessed after the reported RAVEC decision.

The Guardian reported that the government declined a request for police protection outside royal residences. The paper said Harry was exploring options to bring his family safely but was concerned about paparazzi attention around the children.

The security issue has been one of Harry’s longest-running disputes since he and Meghan stepped back as working royals in 2020.

Harry’s Family Visit Is Now Uncertain

The planned July trip was expected to be the Sussex family’s first joint visit to Britain in four years.

People reported that Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet are currently in Europe ahead of the expected U.K. visit. The outlet said the family intends to travel to Britain for engagements around the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, but the children are not expected to attend public events.

People also reported that the family would not receive taxpayer-funded police protection in the U.K. except when inside royal residences. Buckingham Palace has offered Harry and his family accommodation on a royal estate, according to the outlet.

The Dispute Over Police Protection Has Followed Harry for Years

Harry lost automatic taxpayer-funded police protection after leaving royal duties in 2020. He has argued that private security is not enough in Britain because private guards do not have the same access to police intelligence or the same powers as U.K. police.

In May 2025, Harry lost a Court of Appeal challenge over his U.K. security arrangements. ABC News reported that Harry said he was “devastated” by the decision and still wanted reconciliation with his family.

At the time, Harry told the BBC that he could not safely bring Meghan and the children to Britain under the current arrangements.

The July Trip Is Tied to the Invictus Games

The Invictus Games are scheduled to return to the U.K. in July 2027. The Invictus Games Foundation says Birmingham won the bid to host the eighth Invictus Games after being shortlisted alongside Washington, D.C.

People reported that Harry’s July engagements are expected to include events at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, Chatham House, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The Guardian reported that Harry had hoped the visit would allow Archie and Lilibet to spend time with King Charles. No reunion between Harry and the King has been confirmed.

King Charles Reportedly Offered Royal Accommodation

The Sun reported that King Charles’ offer for Harry and his family to stay at a royal residence remains on the table.

People reported that staying at a royal estate would give the family coverage under existing security arrangements at that property. The concern remains protection outside royal grounds, where Harry and Meghan would need to travel for public and private visits.

Harry’s July schedule is still expected to go ahead, according to The Sun. Meghan, Archie and Lilibet’s attendance remains unclear.
