The BBC has scrapped the previously announced 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special, removing the episode that had been expected to bridge the gap after Ncuti Gatwa’s exit and Billie Piper’s surprise return.

The broadcaster announced on June 10 that it had “collectively decided not to go ahead” with the festive episode after discussions with Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf. The same update said Doctor Who will be put out to competitive tender this year as the BBC plans the next phase of the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The decision reverses the BBC’s October 2025 announcement, which said Doctor Who would return at Christmas 2026 with a special written by Davies after Disney+ ended its partnership on future seasons of the show.

Davies then confirmed his own exit in an Instagram statement, saying goodbye to Doctor Who while telling fans they would be waiting for “more Doctor Who than a one-off.”

The BBC Scrapped the Christmas Special and Put Doctor Who Out to Tender

In an official update, the BBC said the tender process is part of securing the next phase of Doctor Who and is tied to the broadcaster’s Charter and Agreement requirements. The BBC said the show remains “an important part” of the broadcaster and that details of the tender will be announced later.

The BBC said it chose not to use a single Christmas episode as a temporary bridge. Instead, the broadcaster said it wanted to focus on future series and the show’s longer-term return.

The BBC also confirmed that the previously announced Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies remains in production. BBC Studios will continue to handle global distribution, licensing, consumer products, digital projects, and immersive experiences, while the BBC retains all Doctor Who intellectual property.

Davies used his Instagram statement to mark the end of his second run with Doctor Who. The writer revived the series in 2005, returned for the 60th anniversary specials, and led the Ncuti Gatwa era with Bad Wolf producing.

According to PA coverage published by The Irish News, Davies said the Christmas special had been announced when the show’s future was still uncertain. He told followers that there was no script, that he had not written the episode, and that no actor had been approached to play the next Doctor.

Davies also said viewers would have to wait longer for new Doctor Who, but said that wait would be for more than a single festive episode.

The Billie Piper Cliffhanger No Longer Has a Christmas Bridge

The canceled special leaves the ending of The Reality War unresolved for longer than expected. The episode ended with Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into Piper, who became one of the defining faces of Davies’ first Doctor Who era as Rose Tyler.

The BBC has not confirmed that Piper is the Sixteenth Doctor. Entertainment Weekly noted after Gatwa’s exit that the BBC and the creative team stopped short of saying exactly what Piper’s return meant for the next version of the show.

That unanswered question now moves into the tender period. The BBC has not announced a new showrunner, production company, return date, or Doctor for the next full phase of Doctor Who.

The Disney+ Exit Set Up the Scrapped Special

The canceled Christmas episode was first announced in October 2025, when the BBC confirmed that Disney+ would not partner on the next season of Doctor Who. At the time, the BBC said Davies had agreed to write a new Christmas special for 2026 and that Bad Wolf would produce it with BBC Studios.

The same October announcement said the BBC remained fully committed to Doctor Who and would reveal plans for the next series later. The June 10 update replaced that plan with a tender process and removed the one-off Christmas return.

The next screen project still on the BBC’s confirmed list is the CBeebies animation series. BBC Studios will also continue to manage the franchise’s global distribution and licensing while the main show’s next production arrangement is decided.
