Heather McComb says James Van Der Beek knew about her wedding to Scott Michael Campbell before his death and gave the couple his blessing.
McComb married Campbell on May 30 in Missoula, Montana. In a new Us Weekly interview, she said Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, both knew the wedding was coming and supported the relationship.
“James and Kimberly both knew that Scott and I were getting married and they both were so full of love and support and excitement,” McComb told the outlet. She said having Van Der Beek’s blessing is something she will always hold in her heart.
McComb and Van Der Beek were married from 2003 to 2010. Her new comments describe a friendship that continued long after the divorce and became part of the emotional backdrop to her wedding day.

McComb announced the wedding on Instagram after marrying Campbell in Missoula. People reported that she described the ceremony as taking place in the couple’s favorite city and said they were surrounded by the people they love most.
The wedding came about three months after Van Der Beek’s death in February 2026. McComb told Us Weekly that she felt the presence of loved ones who had died during the day, describing a double rainbow, ladybugs, and two white doves as part of the ceremony’s emotional setting.

McComb told Us Weekly that her final encounter with Van Der Beek included the conversation about her marriage to Campbell. She said he and Kimberly were loving and supportive, and Entertainment Weekly noted that McComb described the couple as “true soulmates.”
Van Der Beek and Kimberly married in 2010 and shared six children. McComb spoke warmly about their relationship while describing the support she felt from both of them before her own wedding.

Van Der Beek died in February 2026 at age 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer. McComb’s wedding to Campbell happened months later, but her comments to Us Weekly place Van Der Beek’s support among the final personal moments she shared publicly about him.
