Dwayne Johnson is developing a live-action Medusa movie for Disney through Seven Bucks Productions. His involvement is as a producer; he is not currently attached to star.

Deadline revealed the project on Friday, November 6. The film is being developed under Seven Bucks’ existing agreement with the studio.

The story centers on the snake-haired figure from Greek mythology whose gaze could turn people to stone. It is an original live-action project, rather than a remake of a Disney animated film.

Details of the screenplay’s approach remain under wraps. No director, cast or release date has been announced.

Johnson will produce alongside his longtime partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing the project for Seven Bucks. Matt Smith is also producing through Electro Corduroy Entertainment.

Smith brings experience with another Disney film centered on a familiar villain: he executive-produced the Maleficent franchise starring Angelina Jolie.

In June 2024, Seven Bucks announced a multiyear first-look agreement with Disney covering films for theatrical and streaming release. The arrangement gives the studio the first opportunity to consider the company’s projects and allows collaboration across Disney’s divisions.

Johnson and the Garcias previously produced Jungle Cruise, which paired him with Emily Blunt. They also produced the live-action Moana, released July 10, 2026, with Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui.

Michael Montemayor is writing the first draft. His recent Disney work includes the upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled, directed by Michael Gracey and based on the studio’s 2010 animated Rapunzel movie.

Montemayor also wrote the original screenplay for Stepsisters, a Cinderella spinoff focused on Anastasia and Drizella. In March, Deadline reported that Akiva Schaffer would direct and rewrite that script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.

Medusa Has Appeared in Clash of the Titans and Percy Jackson

Medusa is one of three Gorgon sisters, alongside Stheno and Euryale. Unlike her immortal sisters, she can be killed. In the mythology, Perseus beheads her and later uses her severed head as a weapon.

That confrontation became a memorable sequence in the 1981 fantasy film Clash of the Titans and appeared again in its 2010 remake, as Dark Horizons noted.

The character has also appeared in a recent Disney production. Jessica Parker Kennedy played Medusa in the first season of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
