Francis Ford Coppola is marking the 30th anniversary of Jack by sharing a side of Robin Williams that audiences never saw in the finished film.
The director and his American Zoetrope production company released rare rehearsal footage showing Williams improvising with young costar Adam Zolotin.
The clip captures the pair turning a scripted exchange into a playful song while preparing for the 1996 comedy-drama.
Coppola also reflected on the film, calling it “imaginative and unusual” while acknowledging the comparisons and divided reviews that followed its original release.
The Rehearsal Quickly Became an Improvised Song

The footage shows Williams rehearsing with Zolotin, who played Jack Powell’s best friend, Louis Durante. Louis is trying to persuade a nervous Jack to impersonate their school principal so that Louis will not get into trouble with his mother.
Instead of delivering every moment rigidly from the script, Williams and Zolotin hold hands, sing and playfully build the exchange together. Williams moves between Jack’s childlike uncertainty and his own instinct for improvisation, responding to Zolotin without overwhelming his younger scene partner.
“In this rehearsal clip with Adam Zolotin, the two adlib their way playfully through song,” American Zoetrope explained in the post. The previously unseen footage was shared jointly by Coppola and the production company ahead of the movie’s 30th anniversary on August 9.
Coppola Remembered the Film’s Charity Premiere
Coppola said Jack premiered at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts during an event that benefited local charities. The filmmaker has never adopted the view that the movie should be treated as an embarrassing entry in his career, despite the harsh response it received from many critics.
“I loved making Jack and thought it was imaginative and unusual,” Coppola said in the anniversary post. He acknowledged that Penny Marshall’s Big, released eight years earlier, had already explored a related idea through Tom Hanks’ performance as a child suddenly living inside an adult body.
Coppola nevertheless singled out the final portion of Jack as one of the reasons the project remains meaningful to him. “The ending of Jack is very touching,” he said.
Williams Played a 10-Year-Old in a Middle-Aged Body
Jack follows Jack Powell, a boy with a fictional condition that causes his body to age four times faster than normal. Although Jack is only 10, he physically resembles a 40-year-old man.
His parents initially educate him at home, but he eventually enters fifth grade and attempts to build friendships with children his own age. Zolotin’s Louis becomes Jack’s closest friend and helps him enter the social world he had largely experienced from a distance.
‘Jack’ Divided Critics and Audiences
The movie opened in U.S. theaters on August 9, 1996, with an ensemble that included Diane Lane and Brian Kerwin as Jack’s parents, Jennifer Lopez as his teacher, Fran Drescher as Louis’ mother and Bill Cosby as Jack’s private tutor.
Reviews frequently criticized the movie’s shifts between childhood comedy, sentimentality and the darker implications of Jack’s condition. Comparisons with Big also dominated much of the initial coverage.
Roger Ebert argued that the screenplay never fully resolved the conflict between its unusual premise and its efforts to remain a conventional family film. The movie continues to carry a 17% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is considerably higher.
Coppola has continued defending the project. He has said he wanted to make a film that could be enjoyed by younger viewers and was drawn to the opportunity to work with Williams.
Jennifer Lopez Previously Revisited ‘Jack’
Lopez also returned to the movie in August 2024 while marking its anniversary and 10 years since Williams’ death. She shared a classroom scene in which her character, Miss Marquez, introduces Jack to his new classmates and attempts to help the children recognize what they have in common with him. “Celebrating 28 years of this very special movie Jack with the incomparable Robin Williams,” Lopez wrote.
Other young performers from Jack have described similar experiences. Jurnee Smollett, who played one of Jack’s classmates, marked the movie’s 28th anniversary in 2024 by recalling improvisation sessions Coppola organized with Williams. “I’ll never forget learning how to improv from the one and only Robin Williams,” Smollett wrote.
