Linda Purl did not spend her 71st birthday surrounded by a red carpet, cameras or an elaborate Hollywood party. She picked up a cake, went hiking and handled a few errands around Los Angeles.
The Happy Days actress was photographed on Sept. 2 wearing a red baseball cap, long-sleeve blue top and black pants while stopping at a Gelson’s market for her birthday cake, according to Page Six.
Purl also went on a solo hike before friends later joined her at home for a small celebration. The low-key outing offered a rare candid look at an actress whose television career stretches from one of the defining sitcoms of the 1970s to roles on Matlock, The Office, Homeland and Hacks.
Purl is still acting, touring as a jazz vocalist and recording music, and she is preparing to return Off-Broadway later this month while continuing the life and business she has built with fellow television veteran Patrick Duffy.
Purl Kept Her 71st Birthday Surprisingly Simple
The photographs show a birthday that looked deliberately ordinary. Purl collected her cake at Gelson’s, completed other errands and spent part of the day hiking alone before friends came to her home later for a small celebration.
Page Six characterized the outing as a rare public appearance, but Purl has remained professionally busy away from paparazzi attention. Her own schedule shows performances throughout the summer and another major stage commitment beginning just over two weeks after her birthday.
Purl also had a new musical release arrive shortly before turning 71. Her official website says From My Heart, recorded with longtime music director Tedd Firth, was released Aug. 18 as their fifth studio album and combines pop standards with selections from the Great American Songbook.
‘Happy Days’ Gave Purl Two Completely Different Roles
For many viewers, Purl is still Ashley Pfister, the woman who became Fonzie’s serious girlfriend during season 10 of Happy Days. That role was actually her second trip through the sitcom.
Purl had appeared years earlier during season two as Gloria, one of Richie Cunningham’s girlfriends. She returned eight seasons later as an entirely different character opposite Henry Winkler, giving her an unusual connection to two distinct eras of the long-running ABC series.
Her official biography still lists Ashley Pfister among her best-known television roles, alongside Charlene Matlock on Matlock and Helene Beesly on The Office.
Her Career Did Not Stop at Arnold’s Drive-In
Purl continued moving through television, film and theater long after Happy Days. She played Ben Matlock’s daughter Charlene during the first season of Matlock and later appeared as Pam Beesly’s mother Helene on The Office, with other credits including Homeland, The Bold and the Beautiful and Hacks.
Music has remained another major part of her career. On July 24, she performed Nightclub Legends at Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum, a program built around songs associated with singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney.
Her next major project begins Sept. 17, when she is scheduled to star Off-Broadway in Sharon Scott Williams’ one-woman play Crazy Mama at 59E59 Theaters in New York. The production is directed by Purl’s longtime friend and fellow Happy Days alum Anson Williams and runs through Oct. 18.
Patrick Duffy Became an Unexpected New Chapter
Purl’s personal life brought her back into celebrity headlines in 2020 when she and Patrick Duffy unexpectedly became a couple. They had known each other casually for decades before reconnecting through mutual friend Richard Thomas and eventually spending hours talking by video during the COVID-19 shutdown.
The virtual relationship eventually required an in-person decision. Duffy drove roughly 1,500 miles from Oregon to Colorado to see Purl, and he recalled in an April 2026 Yahoo interview that he asked if he could kiss her after arriving at her home. They have been together ever since.
The couple have since combined households in Los Angeles and continued working together. They performed Love Letters at the Rubicon Theatre Company in August and also run Duffy’s Dough, the sourdough business they founded in 2022 with net proceeds directed toward programs addressing food insecurity.
