Hilaria Baldwin Says She Refused Alec’s Gifts to Test Her Own Motives

Hilaria Baldwin says accusations that she married Alec Baldwin for his wealth initially hurt because they did not reflect the precautions she took at the beginning of their relationship.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio, the former yoga instructor acknowledged why their circumstances attracted suspicion.

She was 27 when she met the 52-year-old actor, who was already wealthy and internationally famous.

Hilaria said she nevertheless rejected Alec’s early attempts to buy her things because she wanted to determine whether the relationship would remain appealing without the financial security he could provide.

She Refused Alec’s Offers Despite Living Modestly

Hilaria recalled living in a small New York City apartment with an unpredictable heating system when she met Alec in 2011. Her laptop worked so poorly and became so hot that she sometimes placed her hands around it for warmth at night.

Even under those circumstances, she said, she resisted Alec’s offers to replace things or purchase gifts for her. Accepting substantial financial support too quickly could have created an unhealthy sense of obligation, she explained. She wanted to know that she was staying because of Alec rather than because leaving would mean surrendering a more comfortable lifestyle.

“I need to know that I want to be here,” she said. Hilaria told the hosts that the criticism still hurt because she understood how the relationship appeared from the outside but did not recognize herself in the “gold digger vibes” attached to it.

She Joked That Seven Children Undermine the Theory

Hilaria and Alec married on June 30, 2012, and have since welcomed seven children together: Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo, Romeo, Eduardo, María Lucía and Ilaria. She joked that building such a large and expensive household would be a poor strategy for someone interested only in extracting money from a marriage.

“Have one, then get out,” she said while describing the stereotypical approach a supposed gold digger might take. Alec also has an adult daughter, Ireland Baldwin, from his previous marriage to Kim Basinger.

A Solo Trip Exposed Gaps in Her Children’s Life Skills

Hilaria said she had recently traveled with all seven children without Alec or a nanny and discovered that some of them lacked practical skills she had learned while living independently. She began teaching them how to load a dishwasher, clean a floor and avoid leaving unnecessary messes while eating.

Hilaria said she did not want them entering adulthood without knowing how to complete basic tasks for themselves. She connected those lessons to the independence she valued before meeting Alec. Knowing how to manage ordinary responsibilities, she argued, can help prevent people from feeling financially or practically trapped in unhealthy situations.

She Also Explained Her Viral Red-Carpet Exchange With Alec

The interview returned to a widely shared March 2025 clip in which Hilaria repeatedly told Alec, “When I’m talking, you’re not talking.” The exchange occurred while the couple was discussing their TLC reality series, The Baldwins, at the reopening of Planet Hollywood in New York City.

Alec interrupted as Hilaria attempted to explain the importance of maintaining a routine with seven children. At one point, he asked her for the Spanish word for “essential,” prompting her to accuse him of distracting her. Some viewers interpreted her response as hostile or disrespectful. Hilaria said the phrase was intended as a familiar household joke rather than an indication that she was genuinely angry.

She explained that family members adapt the same construction to everyday situations, such as telling someone not to walk through the same space or reach into the refrigerator at the same moment.

Hilaria said Alec frequently interrupts her and had already done so several times during the red-carpet interview. She argued that the criticism reflected an expectation that she should step aside whenever her older and more famous husband wanted to speak.

She also distinguished the exchange from how she behaves when she is genuinely upset, claiming she is more likely to stop speaking altogether than publicly scold Alec.

The couple later recreated the viral interview in a playful Instagram video, switching roles as they lip-synced each other’s remarks and describing Alec’s interruptions as “manterrupting.”
