Jada Pinkett Smith is asking a Los Angeles judge to order Bilaal Salaam to undergo a mental examination as part of his $3 million lawsuit against her.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Pinkett Smith wants a doctor to examine Salaam for approximately five to six hours because he is seeking damages for severe emotional distress that he attributes to her alleged conduct.

Pinkett Smith’s attorneys frame the request as a discovery step tied to damages, arguing that Salaam placed his emotional and psychological condition directly at issue by seeking compensation for the effects he attributes to her alleged actions.

The case has already produced a partial anti-SLAPP ruling, a $32,836 attorney-fee award for Pinkett Smith and several disputes over depositions and evidence. Salaam’s remaining claims are still pending.

Pinkett Smith Wants a Doctor to Evaluate Salaam’s Claimed Emotional Injuries

Salaam claims the alleged conduct left him fearful enough to spend time outside the United States, contributed to the end of a long-term romantic relationship and was connected to physical problems including high blood pressure. Pinkett Smith argues that those claimed consequences make an independent examination relevant to the damages he is seeking.

TMZ reports that her attorneys want a doctor to assess whether Salaam suffers from the emotional or psychological injuries described in his lawsuit and, if so, their nature and extent. The requested examination would last roughly five to six hours.

Earlier discovery disputes have already involved medical records and communications related to Salaam’s emotional-distress allegations. PEOPLE reported in July that Pinkett Smith’s attorneys accused Salaam of failing to produce certain communications and medical material they considered relevant to those claims.

Salaam’s Lawsuit Centers on an Alleged 2021 Confrontation

Salaam filed the Los Angeles lawsuit on Nov. 7, 2025, alleging three causes of action for intentional infliction of emotional distress. He described himself as a longtime friend and associate of Will Smith and traced the dispute to a private birthday event for Smith in Calabasas on Sept. 25, 2021.

According to the complaint obtained by PEOPLE, Salaam alleges that Pinkett Smith confronted him in a movie theater lobby with several people, became verbally aggressive and warned that he could “end up missing or catch a bullet” if he continued discussing her personal business. He also claims she pressured him to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Pinkett Smith has denied Salaam’s allegations. Her attorneys later filed an anti-SLAPP motion seeking to strike the case, and Los Angeles Superior Court records show that the judge granted the motion in part and denied it in part on April 13.

A judge subsequently ordered Salaam to pay Pinkett Smith $32,836 in attorney fees and costs tied to her partial success on that motion. The court later denied Salaam’s August request to file a revised amended complaint because the motion was untimely. The Los Angeles Times previously reported that Pinkett Smith had initially sought more than $49,000 in fees.

Salaam Has Also Tried to Depose Will Smith

Salaam sought Will Smith’s testimony earlier this year as part of the same discovery process. Correspondence reviewed by PEOPLE showed that he asked Pinkett Smith’s attorneys to help arrange a deposition of the actor.

Her attorneys responded that Will was not a party to the lawsuit and had not been served with a subpoena, meaning the request itself did not compel him to testify. The exchange was later attached to court filings as the sides argued over the scope of discovery.

Will is not a defendant in Salaam’s lawsuit against Pinkett Smith. Salaam has separately indicated in court filings that he intends to pursue legal action against Will, but that stated intention is distinct from the claims currently pending against Jada.
