The case surrounding the death of veteran actor James Handy has moved from arrest to formal criminal charges, days after the 81-year-old performer was fatally stabbed outside a Los Angeles home.
Michael Gledhill, the 44-year-old son of Handy’s girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, has been charged with one count of murder in connection with the actor’s death. People reported that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office also filed a special allegation that Gledhill personally used a deadly weapon, a knife.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced the charge on June 5, two days after Handy was killed in Tarzana, California. Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $2.02 million.
The D.A.’s office said Gledhill faces up to 26 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged. The office also emphasized that the charge is an allegation and that Gledhill is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Police Found Handy Outside the Home
Authorities said officers responded to a 911 call in the 19200 block of Erwin Street at about 9:30 a.m. on June 3. When officers arrived, they found Handy in the front yard with a stab wound to the chest.
Handy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. People reported that dispatch audio included a caller allegedly saying, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” and that Gledhill later flagged down officers and told them he was the person they were looking for.
The Suspect Lived at the Same Home
According to prosecutors, Gledhill lived at the home with his mother, who had been dating Handy. People also reported that Michael lived at the residence with Wendy and Handy.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division. Detectives have described the killing as an isolated incident and said there appears to be no danger to the public.
Neighbors Remembered Handy as Kind and Down-to-Earth
In the days after the killing, neighbors described Handy and Wendy as a friendly couple known around the area. People spoke with neighbor Aaron Titelman, who remembered Handy as “very humble and kind” and said he seemed like someone who mainly wanted to talk about baseball and cats.
Another neighbor, Jerry Merrill, said he had not realized Handy was an actor until after the killing, even though Handy had appeared in films and shows Merrill knew. The detail gives the tragedy a quieter neighborhood dimension: Handy was not only a familiar screen face, but someone people nearby knew as a low-key presence on the block.
Handy Built a Long Career in Film and Television
Handy’s career stretched across decades of supporting roles in major films and television shows. His credits included Jumanji, Arachnophobia, Unbreakable, Logan, NYPD Blue, Alias, NCIS: Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, Rizzoli & Isles, and Castle.
He also appeared in Top Gun: Maverick, which became one of his final major screen credits. For many viewers, Handy was the kind of actor whose face felt familiar even when his name did not immediately come to mind, a steady presence across crime dramas, thrillers, blockbusters, and character-driven television.
The Case Now Moves Through Court
Gledhill’s next court steps will determine how the criminal case proceeds. People reported that Superior Court Judge John H. Reid ordered him transferred to mental health court for psychological evaluations, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 22.
For now, the public record is in the charging stage. Prosecutors have filed a murder charge and a weapon allegation, Handy’s neighbors are remembering him as humble and kind, and the court will next address Gledhill’s mental health evaluations before the case moves further.
