Justin Timberlake is revisiting the rumor that “What Goes Around… Comes Around” was written about Britney Spears. The singer says the betrayal story behind the hit belonged to a friend whose relationship had fallen apart.

Timberlake, 45, discussed the song during his November 5th appearance on Complex’s Re-Rank, joining host Jordan Rose to rank his favorite recordings and explain how they came together.

The track appeared on his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, released in September 2006. Timberlake shares its songwriting and production credits with Timbaland and Danja, collaborators who helped shape the album’s sound.

It became the album’s third Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 in March 2007, following “SexyBack” and “My Love.” The song also earned Timberlake the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2008.

A Friend’s Breakup Inspired “What Goes Around… Comes Around”

“Maybe I should dispel a rumor at this point,” Timberlake said as the conversation reached the song. He recalled listening to his friend describe what had happened in the relationship and asking permission to write about it.

The response gave him both encouragement and a title.

“Yeah, torch that bitch. What goes around comes around,” the friend told him, according to Timberlake’s account.

Timberlake remembered immediately wanting to get to work. He excused himself from the conversation and began turning the experience into a song about betrayal and the possibility that an unfaithful partner would eventually suffer a similar disappointment.

He described the writing as taking “damn near 20 minutes” and said it was the first song he wrote for FutureSex/LoveSounds. Looking back on the finished release, he singled out the interlude and accompanying video as elements that made it especially satisfying.

Billboard noted longstanding speculation connecting the song to his close friend Trace Ayala’s breakup with actress Elisha Cuthbert, but the latest account did not confirm those names.

He initially suggested putting the track first or second among his own songs. According to Billboard’s account of the ranking, it ultimately took the top spot, ahead of “Mirrors,” “My Love,” “SexyBack” and “Cry Me a River.”

Timberlake Denied the Britney Spears Connection Before the Album Came Out

His explanation echoes comments he made before listeners could buy the album. On August 18th, 2006, the Irish Examiner reported that Timberlake had rejected the Spears interpretation in an interview with MTV News.

“It’s about someone that I know,” he said.

Timberlake distinguished the track from “Cry Me a River,” explaining that he had been willing to discuss the inspiration for that earlier song and had no reason to disguise the subject of the newer one. He explicitly said “What Goes Around… Comes Around” was not about Spears.

The two singers had dated from 1999 until 2002. By the time Timberlake was preparing to release his second album, Spears was married to Kevin Federline and expecting their second child, while their marriage was drawing considerable press attention.

In that same 2006 interview, Timberlake said he wished her well but preferred to stop discussing their former relationship. He felt repeated questions gave it too much attention and that his remarks were often misconstrued.

Scarlett Johansson Starred in the Song’s Extended Music Video

The video Timberlake praised turned the song into a short film running more than nine minutes. Samuel Bayer directed it, with a treatment written by filmmaker Nick Cassavetes and a cast that included Johansson and Shawn Hatosy.

Timberlake plays a man who meets Johansson’s character in a nightclub and begins a relationship with her. He later discovers her kissing his friend, played by Hatosy, setting off a confrontation that sends the characters out of the club and onto the road.

Johansson’s character drives away, with Timberlake’s character pursuing her. The chase ends in a crash, leaving him at the scene. Dialogue and action sequences extend the story beyond the song’s performance scenes.

The director’s cut premiered on iTunes on February 9th, 2007. In a contemporary announcement published by Sony, Jive Records said fans purchased more than 50,000 downloads during its first four days.

The pairing also prompted speculation about Timberlake and Johansson offscreen. In an E! interview at the time, Johansson said they had many friends in common and called him “a sweetheart.”

Britney Spears Described the Fallout From “Cry Me a River” in Her Memoir

“Cry Me a River,” released on Timberlake’s 2002 debut solo album, Justified, carried a different history with Spears. Its video featured a blonde actress whose appearance invited comparisons with the pop star, placing the song’s breakup story alongside a recognizable visual reference.

The video shows Timberlake’s character entering his former partner’s home after she leaves with another man. He films himself kissing another woman and leaves the recording for his ex to discover.

Director Francis Lawrence told Dazed in 2017 that he and Timberlake never explicitly named Spears while developing and shooting the video. He described conveying the connection through implication and visual details.

The treatment of Spears received renewed scrutiny following the documentary Framing Britney Spears. On February 12th, 2021, Timberlake issued a public apology that addressed both Spears and Janet Jackson.

In the statement, reproduced by ABC News, he acknowledged speaking out of turn and failing to speak up. He also said he had benefited from a system that condoned misogyny and racism.

Spears subsequently revisited the breakup in The Woman in Me, published in October 2023. She wrote that the video and publicity surrounding Timberlake’s solo career had presented her as the person responsible for their relationship ending.

“In the news media, I was described as a harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy,” she wrote in a passage quoted by Entertainment Weekly.

Spears also wrote that Timberlake had been unfaithful during their relationship and that his public account had omitted those experiences. She described struggling in Louisiana while his career continued to flourish in Hollywood.

“But I was shattered,” she wrote.
