Kate Middleton rarely makes public comments about Prince William during royal engagements, but one exchange at St. James’s Palace gave her an easy opening.
The Princess of Wales attended a Cancer Research U.K. reception on June 2 with King Charles and Queen Camilla as the charity marked its 125th anniversary. William was not at the event, but his name came up when Kate spoke with singer Ronan Keating and his wife, Storm.

The Comment Came at a Cancer Research Reception
The reception was held at St. James’s Palace to mark 125 years of Cancer Research U.K.
People reported that King Charles hosted the event as patron of Cancer Research U.K., with Queen Camilla, Kate, the Duke of Gloucester, and the Duchess of Gloucester also attending.
The event brought together researchers, clinicians, volunteers, and supporters connected to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy.
Kate Also Praised William in Another Conversation
William came up again when Kate spoke with Sebastien Bowen, the widower of Dame Deborah James.
James, known publicly as Bowelbabe, became a major cancer awareness advocate before her death from bowel cancer in 2022.
People reported that Bowen thanked Kate for the support his family had received, including a conversation William had with his and James’s children. Kate responded, “He’s good like that.”
The Event Had Personal Weight for Kate and Charles
The Cancer Research U.K. reception came after both Kate and King Charles publicly disclosed cancer diagnoses in 2024.
Kate announced in March 2024 that she was receiving preventative chemotherapy after cancer was found following abdominal surgery. She said in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy, and People reported that she announced in January 2025 that she was in remission.
Buckingham Palace announced Charles’ cancer diagnosis in February 2024. People reported that his patronage of Cancer Research U.K. was announced when he returned to public-facing duties later that year.
Her Outfit Included a Heart-Print Rodarte Dress
InStyle reported that Kate wore a red and white heart-print Rodarte dress for the reception.
She paired it with a red Miu Miu clutch, red Gianvito Rossi pumps, and ruby and diamond jewelry.
The small Prince William exchange became the most repeated personal moment from the event: guests praised him, and Kate answered with three words.
